The health services and its associated disciplines evolve as society science and technology evolves. In the past, pen and paper was the only way to document a person’s health history. Health information was also given from the perspective of the clinician with little to no patient involvement in the process of health care. While this approach left little to no room for misinformation it also left no room for patient engagement. This approach has affected the cultural outlook on persons in the medical professions especially in relation to doctors who were seen particularly as the epitome of health information. This kind of thinking has even affected the inter relation between doctors and nurses.
Within the last few decades however healthcare has taken a consumer engagement/ involvement approach. This approach encourages active participation in decision making on the part of the patient and the patient’s family. This was and is partly influenced by the availability of information through the advent of and growth in the use of the internet which has revolutionised the way in which a person is able to access information
Consumer Informatics thus has been the result of the interaction between the shift from physician centered to patient centered care and the impact of readily accessible information via the internet. Consumer informatics is the future of nursing informatics and the health profession as a whole.
According to the United States General Accounting Office, consumer health Informatics is the use of modern computers and telecommunications to support consumers in obtaining information analysing their unique health care needs and helping them to make decisions about their own health, in which the consumer interacts with the appl...

Health informatics is best described as the point where information science, medicine, and healthcare all meet. It encompasses the resources, devices, and methods required to optimize the acquisition, storage, retrieval, and the use of information in health and biomedicine. Health informatics incorporates tools such as: computers (hardware and softwar...

Consequently, I also talked to my director and clinical nurse specialist to become a super user, or go to person in our unit, which they were very receptive about it. I would get involved in the nursing informatics in our hospital to gain insight and understanding of the daily task of a nursing informatics specialist.
Nursing is a field that has several diverse options. These options include, bedside nursing, administration, education, case management, forensics, and numerous other possibilities. A new field of nursing has emerged, nursing informatics. Nursing informatics (NI) is defined by the American Nurses Association (2008) as a specialty that “integrates nursing science, computer science, and information science to manage and communicate data, information, knowledge, and wisdom in nursing practice.” Simply defined, nurses are using the combination of technology and nursing knowledge to care for patients and improving outcomes. Nurses are doing this by collecting data, converting that into information, and then into knowledge, where it then can be applied to their critical thinking skills to better care for their patient (Finkalman & Kenner, 2013)
This paper will identify the use of Electronic Health Records and how nursing plays an important role. Emerging in the early 2000’s, utilizing Electronic Health Records have quickly become a part of normal practice. An EHR could help prevent dangerous medical mistakes, decrease in medical costs, and an overall improvement in medical care. Patients are often taking multiple medications, forget to mention important procedures/diagnoses to providers, and at times fail to follow up with providers. Maintaining an EHR could help tack data, identify patients who are due for preventative screenings and visits, monitor VS, & improve overall quality of care in a practice. Nurse informaticists play an important role in the adaptation, utilization, and functionality of an EHR. The impact the EHR could have on a general population is invaluable; therefore, it needs special attention from a trained professional.
After reading for this week assignment, I realized how in depth how useful informatics could be regarding which area of nursing practice you are at, and it is not just the use of computer when it comes to informatics. I would revise my definition of informatics is that informatics is the combination of nursing science, information science, and computer science. The use of informatics and technology helps to support the nursing practice, and it is associated with nursing education and nursing research (Mastrian & McGonigle, 2012).
Burke, L. and Weill, B. (2005). The 'Secondary' of the 'Secondary'. Information Technology for the Health Professions.
Technology is stated as the scientific method and material used to achieve a commercial or industrial objective. To go one step further, nursing technology is using a tool to advance nursing practice. “The Institute of medicine identified that technology as a viable method of enhancing patient care delivery and improving staff productivity” Sensmeier, Horowitz (2003 page). Because inadequate nursing staff causes shortcuts to be taken, there are mistakes made that could have possibly been prevented. Errors by nursing staff were variously reported as being responsible for between 44,000 and 98,000 hospital deaths per year. Sensmeier, Horowitz (2003). Technology can have a large impact on nursing. In the past 5 to 10 years, computerized patient records have increased less than 10%. This number shows us that we are still not embracing technology to its full potential. Today in most hospital systems computerized electronic charting is being used. Many hospitals have many different systems for...
William Goossen’s theory can be applied in nursing practice to develop nursing informatics skills and knowledge, as well as develop technological system competencies among nurses to collect, process, retrieve and communicate pertinent information across health care organizations (Goossen, 2000). This theory is highly applicable in addressing matters related to electronic health records, which are currently characterized with issues of privacy and confidentiality in relation to storage, retrieval and reproduction of patient health information. The model also provides broad applicability in guiding research at any clinical setting and contributes to the discipline of nursing by simplifying and enhancing documentation and storage of patient’s health information and by allowing better utilization of nursing resources (Elkind, 2009).
We are living in electrifying times. Mobile health (mHealth) technology is changing every facet of the way we live. Possibly no area is more imperative or more reflective than the improvements we are observing in healthcare (Fox & Duggan, 2012). In current years, there has been an increase of wearable devices, social media, smartphone apps, and telehealth, and each has immense promise for the future of organized health care (Fox & Duggan, 2012). With the capacity to assemble and interpret patient-made data, these mHealth tools keep the assurance of changing the way health care is provided, proposing patients their own customized medical guidance (Manojlovich et al., 2015). Health care availability, affordability, and quality are
Nursing Informatics is important to the nursing profession since nurses’ work in information-intensive environment. The advanced technology available in recent years allows nurses to collect data from patents, share the information with other nurses and healthcare providers to provide better care and knowledge that can be gather from the information. Information can be used in clinical care, teaching environments, billing and other environments, with regards to privacy policies. The advancement in technology is allowing nurses to spend more time caring for their patients rather that spending time documenting incidents. New devices and applications are allowing patents and other healthcare providers to provide better care by allowing them to
Healthcare is changing daily and with technology these changes are occurring faster. Health informatics is one of these changes. It combines healthcare, information technology and business. This technology makes it easier for healthcare personnel to access client information and for clients to manage their healthcare.
The Future of Nursing Being a registered nurse affords one the option of working in many diverse healthcare settings. In any practice setting, the climate of health care change is evident. There are diverse entities involved in the implementation and recommendation of these practice changes. These are led by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF), the Institute of Medicine (IOM), nursing campaign for action initiatives, as well as individual state-based action coalitions. Nurses need to be prepared and cognizant of the transformations occurring in health care settings, as well as the plans that put them at the forefront of the future.
The nursing field has experienced plenty of advancements both in technology and medicine since the twentieth century. Not only have these advancements changed the face of nursing but have also become an intricate part of the field. Technology has the capacity to improve patient care and outcomes and is therefore of great importance to nursing. How nurses manage clinical workflows and how they deliver patient care have been completely changed by various innovations in software. The rationale used in selecting the topic of advances in nursing is that the world is fast evolving and so is the healthcare sector. Extensive analysis and synthesizing of knowledge, interpretation of information, research and innovations in nursing has been done over the years. It is interesting to have an in-depth look at what has been done by various influencers in the profession. Purpose of this paper is to demonstrate both technological and medical advancements in the nursing field.
