By a simple definition, conjugal visits are private visits that are scheduled for an inmate and their spouse or common-law partner for a certain period of time. Duration of those visits varies between countries therefore they could be from several hours to several days. For instance in Canada, inmates are entitled to up to 72 hours conjugal visits every two months, which is equivalent to 3 full days (csc-scc.gc.ca). During the visits both inmate and visitor are required to obey by the rules and responsibilities as listed by Correctional Service Canada. The exceptions are set by the CSC that can decide not to grant conjugal visits to certain inmates in certain situations such as: history of family violence; disciplinary segregation at the time of the scheduled visit; participating in unescorted temporary absences for family contact purposes; an inmate in Special Handling Unit or approved for a transfer to a SHU (csc-scc.gc.ca). Conjugal visits are taking place in designated special areas within correctional institution that include two-bedroom, kitchen and living area. Personally I’d like to argue that correctional authorities should allow private family visits, including conjugal visits despite controversies going around the topic. In my opinion, everyone should have that right, regardless whether a person is in jail or not. This invention definitely, keeps inmates connected with their family and prepares them for the return to the community.
The history of conjugal visit goes back to 1918 when warden from Mississippi State Penitentiary, James Parchmann implemented the first program. The main goal of the program was to encourage inmates to work harder inside the walls. Those who were productive were later rewarded conjugal visit....

...ould potentially diminish the chances of inmates getting back to prison through revolving door. In addition the programs have been also protecting marriage institution as married couples can fully consummate their marriage. Canada allows program called “Private Family Visiting” through which not only spouses but also immediate family members can spend up to 3 days every 2 months with an inmate. Only six states across our southern border do allow conjugal visits: California, Connecticut, New Mexico, New York, Washington and Mississippi, with the last one planning to liquidate them in the near future. In overall I think that the programs should remain a privilege for inmates simply because their effectiveness has been proven in many studies. At the end isolating an inmate from the family wouldn’t do much of rehabilitation, which should be the main goal of corrections.

Essay on Conjugal Visits

- Prisons are meant to help rehabilitate the way of life for people who have committed crimes. However, the criminal justice system has not proved to be as effective as it should be. Two thirds of people who come out of prison are rearrested within three years (Parker, 2009). I believe this is because the justice system has failed and individuals are not receiving the services for a successful transition into the community. Instead, they remain as criminals. I strongly believe that allowing inmates the right to conjugal visits will help ensure a criminal is rehabilitated and ready to re-enter society....   [tags: Criminal Justice]
