Archaeological evidence shows that coastal Indians had settled the Vancouver area by 500 B.C. British naval captain George Vancouver explored the area in 1792. Located in Richmond, Vancouver International Airport (YVR) is the principal international airport in western Canada and is the second busiest in the nation. As the premier gateway to Asia, it hosts many airlines' regional offices and their flights daily to Asia, Europe, and the United States. Vancouver is the closest air-link to Asia, offering the fastest North American airport with daily flights to the Republic of Korea's Incheon International Airport. Vancouver is also served by the Abbotsford International Airport, fast becoming a reliever to YVR convenient for the eastern suburbs and transborder United States. Operating from Vancouver Harbour Water Aerodrome on the Downtown waterfront, several floatplane operators support both tourist scenic flights and practical transportation, with extensive operations during daylight hours.
Vancouver currently maintains an image as a sort of maternal ethnic melting pot, a region rich in cultural diversity and with a municipality that is both tolerant and welcoming of various displays and traditions. However, upon closer examination of recent history, it becomes clear that the concept of the city embracing minorities with a warm liberal hug is both incorrect and a form of manipulation in itself. The articles Erasing Indigenous Indigeneity in Vancouver and The Idea of Chinatown unravel the cultural sanitization that occurred in Vancouver at the turn of the nineteenth century as means of state domination. Through careful synthesis of primary documents, the articles piece together the systematic oppression suffered by BC indigenous

Mr Robson played a large role in our local history and was the ninth Premier of British Columbia amongst other roles. Beginning as a merchant in Upper Canada, the aspiring gold miner moved West to The Colony of British Columbia in 1859 after hearing news of the Fraser Canyon Gold Rush. Although his prospecting was unsuccessful, he became known in the town of New Westminster, the colony’s capital. Soon after arriving in the unfamiliar colony, Robson was hired in 1861 as an editor for “The British Columbian,” mainland BC’s
Canada is a very diverse country that is home of many different cultures and religions. In fact, without the immigration to Canada from other countries, Canada would have a negative rate of population growth as we have a larger aging population than that which is being born. Canada provides a place of worship for many different religions and religious groups.
There are 1.1 million Aboriginal peoples living in Canada as of 1996 and 408,100 of them are women (Statistics Canada, 2000; Dion Stout et al, 2001). More than half live in urban centres and two thirds of those reside in Western Canada (Hanselmann, 2001). Vancouver is comprised of 28,000 Aboriginal people representing 7% of the population (Joseph, 1999). Of this total population, 70% live in Vancouver’s poorest neighbourhood which is the Downtown Eastside (DTES).
The first settlement is composed of seasonal workers and settlers. World War I brought so much devastation causing inflation, unemployment, fragmentation of peasant farms, poverty, poor health and education, heavy taxation and political dissatisfaction that forced Italians to find better areas to work or live. In Canada, however, railway and mining industries prospered generating demands for workers that sparked this batch of migrants. The low cost of oceanic travel, success of previous immigrants, good wages and better job opportunities are also other factors that pulled them to Canada. The seasonal workers came here to work during spring until fall then go b...

...e stayed behind for our beautiful scenery, and great people. Although many people rushed to find gold, wanting to “get rich quick,” very few actually did get rich. The Gold Rush gave our economy a boost, but also hurt it. The quick reduction in revenue when everyone left made it hard for BC to repay all the debts. Because of this, the two colonies, BC and Vancouver Island, joined together. And that set the wheels in motion for the combined province of British Columbia to join the Confederation of Canada.
Nowadays, when concepts of integrity, complexity, and globalization play a huge role in shaping our society, a concept of multiculturalism is common and widely accepted by most countries in the world, including Canada. According to Statistics Canada, as of January 2014, an estimate of Canadian population exceeded 35 million people and 20.6% of the total population are immigrants from other countries (Statistics Canada, 2014). These figures mean that on average every fifth person living in Canada was born in another country. This is especially relevant for Province of British Columbia, where, according to BC Stats, the population estimate equals to 4.6 million people as of July 2013 and BC was named one of the three Canadian provinces that accept most immigrants from all over the world (BC Stats, 2014). Unfortunately, the most recent demographics research on British Columbia population available was made in 2006. However, those numbers can still help to evaluate proportions of different ethnicities living in BC right now. As of Canada 2006 Cencus, minority population equaled to 24.8% and 10% of those immigrants were Chinese. Chinese people represent the biggest immigration minority in British Columbia, followed by South Asian (6.4%) and Filipino (2.2%) (Chui, 2006). While being the biggest diaspora in BC, Chinese population keeps growing as new working and studying opportunities provided by federal and provincial governments. The main aim of this research is to 4study historical reasons that led to given nowadays demographics. This paper is going to try to support an argument that historical events happened in Canada in the past and involved Chinese immigrants, especially the building of Canadian Pacific Railway, had a positive eff...

When a city of Ottawa was chosen as Canada’s capital On December 31, 1857 it first originated as a request to find a new capital, from the fathers of confederation to Queen Victoria, and by her officials here in Canada and the United Kingdom. In addition to have a new capital there was a need to have a seat of the government that was protected from attack from the Americans, As a result Ottawa was chosen, as the nation’s capital. Today many Canadians are enjoying the benefits of that decision. Many cities served before as capital of the United Provinces of Canada: Kingston, Montreal, Toronto, (originally know as York, was burned to the ground by invading Americans forces in the war of 1812) and Québec City, those cities were vulnerable from attack because they were located not far across from the American border. When choosing a capital everybody must realize that the safety of a country is very important, and therefore the location of the nation’s capital needs to take many things into consideration before the final decision is made, for instance How far it is from the border? Do th...
