Conflict Theory
In sociology, conflict theory occurs under the normal functioning society, due to the different social groups are under a different power, wealth and society treatment situation, resulting in conflicts between groups. These conflicts and arise revolution, political changes and/or other social changes. Conflict theory emphasizes the conflict between different social groups is the main driving force of social changes.
Conflict theory are mostly used to explain different social stratification’s idea on ideology, such as Socialism and Capitalism. Conflict theory are introduced to refute structural functionalism. Structural functionalism sees individuals and groups are the “components” of the society/organization, if these components work together, then the society/organization will function normally. However, structural functionalism has a weak description about the competitions between these components, thus conflict theory is introduced, and under the conflict theories, competition plays the key role.
The three major behavior of modern conflict theory are competition, inequality in social structure, and revolution.
So, what is conflict? American sociologist Lewis Coser defined conflict as “A struggle over values and claims to scarce status, power and resources in which the aims of the oppents are to neutralize, injure, or eliminate their rivals.”(Coaser, The functions of social conflict). Conflict occurs when people are disappointed towards the uneven distribution among the society, if it doesn’t touch upon the basic idea of value or what people share in common, then it is not destructive, in fact it will only benefit the society. Conflict is a important balancing mechanism in the society.

The occurrence of conflict theory has made a great response in the western sociology field. It has widely spread into the research of different sociological topics. In fields like political sociology, organizational sociology, social stratification and marriage has all appeared a large amount of articles using the basis of conflict theory. Has a dramatic impact on the current society.
