Who am I? Where do I come from? Where am I going? These are repetitive questions that we ask ourselves or others in the process of finding our individuality. And we comprehend those questions went we understand ourselves and others. The concepts of understanding our self-teem reflect a very important aspect in each of our lives as we grow up, the effort that we made to understand ourselves and develop an identity that will evidently reflect our cultural heritage is crucial for a concrete understanding of our individuality. According to our Child Psychology book, is stated that self-esteem “is a global evaluation dimension of the self, also called self-worth or self-image” and factor like race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, popularity play a major role when a person is developing. Those who feel good about themselves are level as having a high self-esteem, they are usually happy, successful and productive in life, they can persist longer at difficult task, and are more accepting in society. On the other hand people with low self-esteem are more anxious, depressed and pessimistic about their future. Self esteem is based on what kind of importance we give to ourselves, it is to think how valuable we are to the world and how valuable we think we are to others. Self-esteem takes part in our every life aspect either it`s trusting others, our relationships or in our working conditions. These experiences have given messages about the type of person someone will become. A number of situations can negatively affect a person’s self-esteem. Negative experiences create negative beliefs. Visual, aural, or experienced events in one’s family, the wider community and school have influenced the views of a person. Self-esteem is a term used to describe self-evaluation. The term self-evaluation is used to express that self-esteem is a product of personal reflection. A person with a high self-esteem has positive self-regard while a person with low self-esteem has negative self-regard. Self-esteem can be impacted by several external factors and is most impacted in the childhood years. Individuals who feel respected in their childhood are more likely to develop high self-esteem. Signs of respect include being listened to and being given attention. Such actions make a child feel loved and valued. Children who are exposed to more disrespectful actions like abuse, or harsh criticism are more likely to develop a low self-esteem.
Before stepping onto the topic of the way we see ourselves, we first have to try to fully understand the definition of self-concept. The classification of self-concept is defined in many different ways by various researchers and practitioners over years. According to Purkey and William (1988), the popularity and attention of self-concept has been raising since decades of ignorance. Self-concept is mainly regarded as the realisation of our own existence; who we are, what is our purpose and how we fit into the society. Self-concept can be defined in a very complex manner. For example, it can be explained as a cognitive representation of oneself that gives coherence and meaning to one’s experience, including one’s relations to other people. It organises past experiences and plays an important role in assisting us to recognise and interpret relevant stimuli in the social environment (Hewstone, Stroebe & Jonas, 2008). Nonetheless, self-concept can also be clarified as simple as a statement where Fromm (1956) describe as “life being aware of itself.” After understanding the notion self-concept, we then can proceed to use different approaches to search a suitable answer to the question of “Why do we ‘see’ ourselves in the way that we do?”.

As I grew up in Korea, I was born with physical disabilities with my right side of the body, because my parents told me that there was an accident when I was born during that time. My parents noticed that I have a physical disability when I was about age 4 or 5, and they were working hard to find the ways for treatment for my right side of the body. Furthermore, some people did not respect people who have physical disabilities in Korea about 11 years ago, so my parents had lower self esteem, but they have not given up on me.
