Computers in Education

Computers influence on education has been a widely argumentative issue. Opponents believe that introducing computers in schools will waste time, available funds and cognitive development by cutting down on vital learning experiences that a child should experience. Computers are a vital asset in education because they increase intellectual development, creativity, and promote correlations between teachers and students. Being that I am a new to fatherhood; I want to understand if technology can in fact be a precarious part of children’s education. For the purpose of this paper, I will juxtapose computers use in education.

According to Breipohl review, Computers in Early Childhood Education - A jump start or a setback on Computers in Education (2006), the idea of using computers to teach children programming goes back to the 1960s and to the invention of the Logo programming language. Since then thousands of educators have believed that computers are a tool for enhancing cognitive development in young children” (Breipohl 2006). Consequently, research in the area of technology has been that of cognitive growth and the effect that modern technology has on children’s minds. Critics and advocates of computers in the classroom agree on the importance of the adolescent years in a child’s intellectual development. Are computers being used appropriately to develop and rush a student’s cognitive development, or are they just obstructing intellectual growth? In an advanced world where our daily lives are measured by technology, in relations to students and intellectual development, we are forced as teachers and parents to “rush” our children within the realm of advanced technology.
