Who would have guessed that the once mere concept of artificial intelligence (AI) could actually be a reality in the year 2015? Artificial intelligence is the intelligence exhibited by machines or software. It is also the name of the academic field of study which studies how to create computers and computer software that are capable of intelligent behavior. But we can go even deeper into the topic and question: really what defines intelligence? is not a negative situation. The creation of technology has thousands of positive effects on our society today, causing almost everything to move quicker and more efficiently. Putting in a job application, going to the checkout line at the grocery store, research, the astounding developments in the automobile and medical industry, the list goes on and on. The technological world is not a dark and negative one, because we are not completely reliant on technology, yet. A person that I am inspired by every day in my life once told me “knowledge is power” then soon after quoted the movie Spiderman in saying that “with great power comes great responsibility”. I believe that this directly applies to the way we should handle the forever growing mountain of knowledge that is the technological world. If handled incorrectly the future generations of the human race could become completely dependent technology and forget about the thousands of years of knowledge that our generations before us hold within the confines of their brains. There are times before us that we know nothing of unless written by or have it told to us by someone who was there, that is human tradition and the only way to keep this knowledge alive. When I was five years old I could barely, if at all, work the television remote. This does not mean that I was an unintelligent five year old, this just means that it wasn’t expected of me. Most five year olds in the late nineties weren’t familiar with the television remote or even the television functions, let alone a computer. These children today were born in an age where their parents are using the computers, smartphones and tablets more frequently and for more reasons than my parents ever used a television. The new world that this generation is being brought up will have a paramount effect on their concept of intelligence if they are not taught to value human history and the knowledge that the people who have come before them hold.
