While research is still underway in developing good datasets, there are a wide variety of Computer Vision applications in many different fields. One area that is of tremendous importance is medical image processing. In particular, physicians and surgeons need to extract important information from X-rays, ultrasounds, tomography images, and so on. Therefore, the task of the detecting tumors, changes, and other signs of medical conditions is an area of medicine that Computer Vision can play a big role in. According to Professor Brian Scassellati at Yale University, the very first self- driving cars were actually developed in a project called Navlab at Carnegie Mellon University. In it, researchers built a range of vehicles including mini-vans, sedans, and buses. Special sensors were installed in the vehicles so that they could steer, brake, and accelerate all on their own. However, DARPA wanted more and so they held the same challenge the following year. At that time, technology advanced so much that 5 vehicles went through the course (5). The fastest one was Stanley, a car built by Stanford University and it actually went 132 miles in less than 7 hours (5). The vehicle used a combination of camera, radar, and sonar systems. It also used laser range finders to detect obstacles and it was able to autonomously brake and apply gas. This was an amazing achievement and today, Google’s self-driving car is making news headlines and sparking great interest from people and media all over the world. These vehicles have driven over 1.2 million miles without any human involvement (5). While this is an amazing detail, the cars sold in the US are actually partially autonomous. Since 2003, Toyota and other manufacturers have developed parking assistance programs that included sensors that can allow for short-range detection of objects like cars or other humans. The driver can push a button that issued a request. The system then guides the car into a parking position. When the driving of an autonomous car demonstrates that the computer can safely and reliably transport the passengers to their destination, this frees up the passengers to do other things that they would not normally be able to do if they were driving the car manually.
