While research is still underway in developing good datasets, there are a wide variety of Computer Vision applications in many different fields. One area that is of tremendous importance is medical image processing. In particular, physicians and surgeons need to extract important information from X-rays, ultrasounds, tomography images, and so on. Therefore, the task of the detecting tumors, changes, and other signs of medical conditions is an area of medicine that Computer Vision can play a big role in. Specifically, the machine can enhance images that may be blurry or ones that contain a lot of noise. Another important field that Computer Vision can assist in is military applications. During combat, Computer Vision tacking software can be used to bring missiles to specific targets as well as provide detection in the relative positions of enemy troops and vessels. Another very important application of Computer vision is self-driving or autonomous cars. According to Professor Brian Scassellati at Yale University, the very first self- driving cars were actually developed in a project called Navlab at Carnegie Mellon University. In it, researchers built a range of vehicles including mini-vans, sedans, and buses. Special sensors were installed in the vehicles so that they could steer, brake, and accelerate all on their own. The systems were really primitive at the time but the most impressive system that they built drove from Pittsburg to San Diego (5). However, DARPA wanted more and so they held the same challenge the following year. At that time, technology advanced so much that 5 vehicles went through the course (5). The fastest one was Stanley, a car built by Stanford University and it actually went 132 miles in less than 7 hours (5). The vehicle used a combination of camera, radar, and sonar systems. It also used laser range finders to detect obstacles and it was able to autonomously brake and apply gas. This was an amazing achievement and today, Google’s self-driving car is making news headlines and sparking great interest from people and media all over the world. These vehicles have driven over 1.2 million miles without any human involvement (5). While this is an amazing detail, the cars sold in the US are actually partially autonomous. Since 2003, Toyota and other manufacturers have developed parking assistance programs that included sensors that can allow for short-range detection of objects like cars or other humans. The driver can push a button that issued a request. The system then guides the car into a parking position. Also, just last year, Tesla added a new feature to their Model S, an auto-driving or “auto-pilot mode.” The” auto- pilot mode” can detect other vehicles and brake accordingly. It is also able to follow other vehicles, stay within the lane that it is driving on, and look with cameras and infrared rays at different obstacles around it.
