In order for the motor to function, it must have air and fuel. The valve train is the system that provides this. It is composed of the camshaft, lifters, pushrods, valve springs, rocker arms, and valves (Brain). The main piece of the valve train is the camshaft. Not to be confused with the crankshaft, the camshaft rotates to lift the lifters, pushrods, and ultimately, the valves. Rotation is transferred from the crankshaft to the camshaft via the timing chain. Along with making the camshaft rotate, the timing assembly also does as its name suggests by keeping the crank and cam in time. The camshaft has several egg shaped lobes on it that elevate the lifters with the narrow end of the lobe. In this application, there are sixteen lobes. Different camshafts have different specifications for amount and duration of lift. This modifies how much the valves open and for how long, allowing more or less fuel to enter the motor. Each valve has its own corresponding lobe, lifter, and pushrod. The lifters and pushrods are simply what transfers the “lift” from the camshaft to the rocker arm and valve. Because the cam pushes up and the valves need to move down, something is required to transfer the force. This is where the rocker arms come in. Rocker arms act as a fulcrum so that when the pushrod pushes up, the rocker arm pivots and pushes the valves down. These tie into the valve springs which force the rocker arm back to its original position(“Technical Brochure”). Moving on to the valves, there are two valves per cylinder.
