The sad reality is that new nurses lack skills that allow them to perform at a truly competent level. What this paper will discuss are the competencies that new graduate nurses have and are entering the workforce and compare them to what is required to be proficient in the professional field. This paper will also discuss how the transition from student to professional can be facilitated through extensive orientation programs that have been proven to elevate nurses from novice to professional.

...ing. The ability to handle stressful situations in a real world setting is a trait that can only be measured accurately through real world experience. Unfortunately, nursing schools are not able to measure or offer those experiences with the limited clinical time a student nurse expereinces. The issues with those experiences are how they come about and the support- or lack thereof- the newly hired nurse has. Whether it be preceptors or a rigorous training period that goes beyond the traditional orientation, something should be implemented to assure that nurses are confident and competent. Burnout and lack of retention are issues that can be addressed with these methods. A new nurse should not have to carry all these insecurities and self-doubt with them. Instead, a program that builds and empowers nurses has been shown to transition novice nurse to competent nurse
