Comparison of Programs of Curricula
Nursing education is fundamental to ensure that newly graduated nurses provide safe and efficient care within the current workforce. Developing an effective nursing program that meets the standards of the credentialing body will enable programs to prepare students for the future. The curriculum should provide the student with learning experiences that are essential for quality nursing practice (NLN, 2013). Curriculum should produce an atmosphere of excitement about learning with a spirit of inquiry (NLN, 2013). Faculty is also active in helping the program achieve its goals and is accountable for promoting excellence (NLN, 2013). Associate and Baccalaureate nursing programs have different credentialing requirements. American Association of College of Nursing (AACN) has created nine Essentials that address the Institute of Medicines (IOM) recommendations for the fundamental knowledge needed for health care professionals (AACN, 2013). The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) accredits the associate level programs as well as other programs from practical nursing to clinical doctorate (ACEN, 2014). The purpose of this paper is to compare and contrast two different program’s curriculum. The associate level program is the Gordon State College School of Nursing and the baccalaureate program is the Georgia Baptist College of Nursing of Mercer University.
