The stories of both Winston Smith and Katniss Everdeen in 1984 and The Hunger Games follow the characters through their struggles set in a futuristic dystopian society. In both of the novels, the governments of the societies have an iron grip on their citizens. The people in the countries are afraid to even do so much as think bad thoughts about the system they are governed by, for fear of having their tongues cut off, or worse. There is a clear and defined hierarchy system in both of the dystopian societies, and at the top of each society is a single male dictator who has an immense totalitarian power over the citizens. There is also a large fear inflicting police force in each novel that sides with the dictator and keeps the people under In The Hunger Games it goes from the dictator at the top, President Snow, then to the people who live in the very wealthy Capitol, next comes the Peace Keepers who enforce the rules of President Snow to the people of Panem. Lastly come each of the 12 districts. District 1 is considered the highest class district and most wealthy, then they each go down in rank with the number. Lastly is District 12, where the people are so poor that they barely survive on a daily basis, and their huts are infested with cat sized rats. The class system in 1984 also goes from a single dictator, to the wealthy and powerful, and then the poor. Big Brother is the figurehead dictator, then comes the Inner Party members, then the Outer Party members, and the Proletariats. Big Brother and the Inner Party are similar to President Snow and the Game Makers (the people who help him develop the Hunger Games). The Outer Party members and the Thought Police are like the Peace Keepers and the people of the Capitol because they are the ones who enforce and practice the rules of the government. Finally, the Districts and the Proletariats on the bottom tier are the classes who are the most vulnerable and get bullied by the police forces the most. The people in the novel are born into these classes and can not move The books are also meant to warn its readers about what can happen to society if the people allow the government to overstep its boundaries. It is scary to think that some of the techniques the government used in the book 1984 are in America somehow today. For Example, the “endless war” can be compared to America’s “war on terror” today. Both war seem to have been going on for forever, and the enemy is always changing. America went to war with Iraq, next Al Qaeda, now ISIS. It seem as though America will always have terrorist, but will just focus on fighting different groups at a time. There is not much of a difference between the terrorist groups, just like there is not much of a difference between Eastasia and Eurasia, the countries that Oceania is always fighting. Telescreens were used by the government in 1984 to watch its citizens, now days America has a different kind of telescreen. These telescreens are just as scary because they watch citizens without their knowledge. Phones and computers monitor what its owner likes and views frequently and keeps an internal database. Even though the intentions of the technology watching the people is different, it is still not acceptable. Whenever people go in public, there are being watched every step they take by cameras. I have a friend whose dreams were shattered thanks to the system we have now. Andrea 's eleventh-grade year was very difficult for her because her mother died at the beginning of the school year. She struggled with depression, and after being in honor classes for the past three years, she started to struggle with her classes. Another blaring difference between the two societies in Fahrenheit 451 and the Hunger Games is that of their government. The form of government in Fahrenheit 451 consists of a democracy whereas the Hunger Games government is corrupt and resembles nothing of a democracy. Even though we may see the world of Fahrenheit 451 as strange and bad there is still a democracy, which we consider to be fair. A similarity between the two governments systems would be how they both suppress things much like it is today, that each government believes could hurt the stability of society. The Hunger Games government suppresses interaction between districts to instill conformity because they know if there was interaction it could cause unhappiness and take away from the level of cooperation between the people and the government.

Dystopias are places where society is backwards or unfair, and they are usually are controlled by the government, technology, or a particular religion. When writing his novel 1984, George Orwell was conveying his disapproving thoughts about the actions of the fascist dictators that were attempting their rise to power during World War II. The book “1984” by George Orwell is a fictional work that was penned as a discourse on Orwell’s views of what it would be like to live in a totalitarianism society. It is my belief that his views were based on his personal life experiences as he witnessed first hand many of the violent crimes perpetuated by those in positions of authority. Often, these crimes against one segment of society were carried out by other members of the same society in the name of political advancement or at other times out of fear for one’s life. Due to his experiences, Orwell began to write of his hatred of political power and the concept of a totalitarianism society. “1984” serves as a warning to readers of how a government can become abusive when seeking total control of it’s population. Furthermore, it showcases in great detail how a society can allow itself to be controlled through a series of psychological abuses and manipulation of historical information.
In 2007, the NSA started a program called PRISM, where they can request information from large companies such as Google, Yahoo, Facebook, Microsoft, and Apple without probable cause. This program reduces our freedom and privacy (largely), but by doing so, the NSA is keeping us safe from terrorists and many more threats. The pyramids of power found in both series are extremely similar. Snow represents the “president” of the capitol. He makes all of the major decisions and tells the lower inhabitants what they should or shouldn’t do. Just below him are the citizens of the capitol. They represent the doctors, lawyers, and other professionals of modern day America. Individuals who complete these tasks appear to belong to the upper class and hold a majority of the wealth for a nation. Next, the higher districts in The Hunger Games hold the jobs that are essential for the society to thrive, yet do not hold a substantial amount of wealth. I compare these people to the middle class of our society. Lastly, the final few districts in The Hunger Games handle the down and dirty tasks, similar to the lower class. 1984 portrays big brother and the inner party as the heads of their hierarchy. The outer party exists just outside of big brother and the inner party, handling the important jobs. These include, but are not limited to, erasing previous history, manufacturing important materials, and finding the people who go against big brother. Some of the biggest issues that is becoming compromised today is the issue of privacy, which in the book 1984 was something that the people did not have much of because of things like telescreens. Not only is our privacy compromised but the government is also being too controlling. Ways today’s privacy is being compromised are through things like game consoles, phones, social media, and drones and not only is our being compromised through these things but the government is also gaining too much control by compromising our privacy.

Much can happen in a matter of minutes; a man can go from thinking he is happy to thinking his life is falling apart, or can change from hating someone to loving them. These experiences sound outlandish, but they happened to Guy Montag, the main character in Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451, and Winston Smith, the main character in George Orwell’s 1984. These two dystopian novels are about the characters discovering major problems in their societies, and then trying to fix them. Montag lives in a society where television controls people’s lives and books have become illegal. On the other hand Smith lives in Oceania, a territory led by a totalitarian regime. This regime is headed by Big Brother and is referred to as the Party. By examining Fahrenheit 451 and 1984, it is seen, not only through the dehumanized nature of society, but also through the theme of lies and manipulation that both Orwell and Bradbury wish to warn of a horrifying future society.
Giving students a grade that they have not earned hinders the youth’s future educational success. A number of schools are no longer giving a grade of zero on assignments, tests, and exams completed by students. While other school districts continue to give students the grade that is adequate for the work they have done or have not completed. Giving students the grade that equals their work is designed to show students where they need to improve. Many school boards want to stop giving out zeros for work that hasn’t been turned in and give a grade that rages around the “D” area keeping children from falling behind in their classes.
