Poverty, every country experiences it, but it doesn’t affect every country the same. Some more developed countries might have certain policies in place to help people who are struggling to make ends meet, until they get back on their feet. It is more likely that less developed countries might not have any policies in place. I decided to compare poverty between India and Canada. They both are so opposite of each other. I knew that it would be interesting to see how both countries deal with the less fortunate.
The first thing I found extremely interesting and sad when researching India current situation regarding the poor, was that they only spend one percent of their GDP on health. That is astonishing. We all know that in order to provide for …show more content…

Fifty percent of Indian people do not have proper shelter. More than seventy percent do not have access to toilets or clean water. We can imagine the huge amount of problems lack of sanitation can bring. How can people focus on trying to make money when they do not even know where they will lay their head down to sleep at night. Another interesting thing I learned was that a lot of India follows the caste system. The caste system is a class structure and it is determined by birth. It essentially locks into whatever situation you are born into. If you are born to a poor family, you will remain poor and if you are born to a rich family you will be rich. Compared to the 276 million people that live in poverty in India, Canada only has 4.9 million people who are living in poverty. While that is still a lot of people, that is a lot less than India. There seems to be a big wage gap as well for women in Canada. Canadian women earn seventy-two cents for every dollar earned by a man. That can lend a huge hand in the current poverty issues facing Canada. I thought we were breaking the glass ceiling but it seems we have a long way to go. While there is poverty in Canada it is not anywhere close to what India is experiencing. Canadians have access to government assistance and better access to jobs. In Canada they offer universal healthcare as well as access to public education. Those are two things India is lacking. Free healthcare means better health and the ability to work and provide for yourself. Canadians also have access to education, the more educated you are the more likely you are to excel in your future. What I found interesting was the fact that the poverty most Canadians experience is only temporary, about 60 percent of people only go through it for a short time. When I looked at India’s situation, the people living there seemed to deal with poverty their entire lives if they were born into poverty. Canada has a lot more policies in place to help people excel and better their
