Mesopotamia and the Indus River Valley Civilization are two early civilizations that were the foundation of the urban world we live in today. These two empires were extremely productive and successful and played a key role in the advancement of human life. Both of these civilizations were able to produce new ideas, beliefs, systems, and technologies that we still use in modern times due to their stability. Their stability was the ultimate factor that made these empires prominent among the other civilizations during that time. The Mesopotamia and the Indus River Valley shared many similarities such as their view on gender role, social hierarchies, and economic activities. They made their tools and weapons out of copper, tin, and bronze. They also designed some of the first boats. They even came up with an irrigation system, writing system, and the idea of wheeled vehicles. Overall, Mesopotamia and the Indus Valley Civilization made key contributions to the advancements in technology.
The Indus valley’s economy consists mainly of farmers as they were primarily based on agriculture. They grew a wide variety of crops such as wheat, barley, lettuce, various melons, and dates. The people of the Indus Valley were the first to cultivate cotton and eventually learned how to weave its fibers into cloth.
If you were not a farmer in the Indus Valley you were probably a merchant or trader. The trades traveled in boats across rivers, or risked traveling over a desert in early versions of a wheeled vehicle. The Indus Valley often shipped cotton cloth, grain, copper, pearls, and ivory combs to cities in Mesopotamia, while Mesopotamia shipped flax, which was a major crop at that time which was used for oil, food, cloth, and a net. They passed on their knowledge through oral stories, artifacts, and writings. The Mesopotamian and Indus Valley civilizations provided us with basic technologies that we steadily improved on. They also created a basic architecture that is reflected in our buildings, art, and clothing today. These extremely successful civilizations left a huge impact on the present-day Earth. Their interactions with each other started many connections between two fairly different parts of the world. Mesopotamia and the Indus Valley’s common idea of advancement lead to many innovations and the creation of various technologies. Some of the various contributions of these two ancient civilizations to our current world include: first set of laws, sewage system, wheeled vehicles, written language, and measuring tools.
