Writing short stories is common for most writers but the writer must give a powerful message in as few pages as they can. While comparing and contrasting short stories “Harrison Bergeron” written by Kurt Vonnegut, and “A Saucer of Loneliness” written by Theodore Sturgeon, I found that both stories were science fiction and they both offer scenarios to fascinating what if situations. In this case, both stories answer what if questions to situations where the government controls, but they also relay hidden personal meaning.
First, the core plots of both stories is different but I found similarities between the two. Harrison Bergeron is a story that’s based in the United States in the year 2081, where the government creates total equality for all people. People weren’t just created equal by law or by god, but created equal by looks, strength, and beauty. In this story, the government places handicaps on any person that is stronger, smarter, or more beautiful than the average American citizen. The types of handicaps the government places on citizens ranges from radios in their ears that scatter their thoughts, to weights around their necks to eliminate their strength, or masks over their faces to hide outstanding beauty. The 211th, 212th, and 213th amendments added to the U.S Constitution were to thank for total equality. On the other hand, “A Saucer of Loneliness” starts with a man rescuing a woman attempting to drown herself in the sandy, sea foaming seashore. When he finally saves her and gets her to settle down and talk to him, she reveals her story to him. The man learned from the woman’s story that when the she was 17 years old and in Central Park in New York on a spring day the woman received a personal message from a sauc...

...ffected me because I was once someone who said that total equality might be what the world needs, but this story showed me how the government might control such a situation to gain total equality and it wasn’t appealing at all. This story created a cruel, lonely, forgetful, boring world with total equality. It reminded me to embrace the differences in people and appreciate that we all have different strengths and weaknesses. Although “A Saucer of Loneliness” shows us government control in an alien-like situation, it also provides a deeper meaning. A meaning to loneliness. It shows us that no matter how lonely we may feel there is always someone lonelier. It affected me personally because I have felt the kind of loneliness this women was feeling. “A Saucer of Loneliness” will always remind me that in times of loneliness I have to remember that I am not the only one.
In the year 2081, people were finally equal, and everyone was equal in every which way. No one could be more intelligent than the other or more attractive. All of the equality was due to the 211th, 212th, and 213th Amendments to the Constitution. The reader may feel sorry for George Bergeron because of his tallness and his handicaps, Hazel’s normal intelligence, and the comments about their son Harrison.
At the first glance, an image of the society portrayed in the “Harrison Bergeron” short will put the reader at a halt. This short story depicts a nation that has made the world a place of pure equality. “They weren't only equal before God and the law. They were equal every which way. Nobody was smarter than anybody else. Nobody was better looking than anybody else. Nobody was stronger or quicker than anybody else.” (Vonnegut). The government had completely taken over the nation and its people. There were handicaps for those who had advantages over anyone else. Power was non-existent in this land. Mainly because all of it belonged to the government. If there was ever a time to see the imbalance of power it would be now. This story is not only a fictitious short to entertain the reader. This Short is a warning to the world providing a view of the consequences of power. “Ironically, no one really benefits from these misguided attempts to enforce equality” (Themes and Construction: "Harrison Bergeron"). Even on the television programs, beautiful women with handicaps placed on their faces. “They were burdened with sashweights and bags of birdshot, and their faces were masked, so that no one, seeing a free and graceful gesture or a pretty face, would feel like something the cat drug in.” (Vonnegut). An elaborate handicap had been placed over the whole country and the public was fine with it! Power causes more than a hardship if not detected. It ruins lives. Harrison Bergeron is a short story that creates many images and feelings while using symbols and themes to critique aspects of our lives. In the story, the future US government implements a mandatory handicap for any citizens who is over their standards of normal. The goal of the program is to make everyone equal in physical capabilities, mental aptitude and even outward appearance. The story is focused around a husband and wife whose son, Harrison, was taken by the government because he is very strong and smart, and therefore too above normal not to be locked up. But, Harrison’s will is too great. He ends up breaking out of prison, and into a TV studio where he appears on TV. There, he removes the government’s equipment off of himself, and a dancer, before beginning to dance beautifully until they are both killed by the authorities. The author uses this story to satire
Ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle once said, “The worst form of inequality is to try to make unequal things equal.” Kurt Vonnegut portrays Aristotle’s philosophy brilliantly in his short story “Harrison Bergeron.” The story depicts the American government in the future mandating physical handicaps in an attempt to make everyone equal. Vonnegut describes a world where no one is allowed to excel in the areas of intelligence, athletics, or beauty. Yet, the inequalities among the people shine even brighter. Vonnegut uses satire to explore the question of whether true equality can ever really exist.
I know I’ve been confronted with difficult situations, but none can compare to the hardships of this young girl. Inevitably, loneliness will overpower any other foul emotion and influence a person to make a change. This is seen in everyday life as people are constantly searching for attention, new comrades or someone to relate to. When analyzing this paragraph, I saw it as a perfect foreshadowing of the development that this character will undergo.
Factors that can fuel loneliness are abundant: depression, trauma, social rejection, loss, low self-esteem, etc. The aspect of human connection and interaction is a psychological requirement for all people, even to those who push others away. These elements of isolation are presented through three methods in a 1938 novel of friendship. John Steinbeck uses indirect characterization, discrimination, and conflict to demonstrate the effects of loneliness and need for companionship in his novel Of Mice and Men.

The power of novels can allow readers to learn significant lessons about humanity and life experiences. Steinbeck’s novel “Of Mice and Men” set in Americas great depression of the 1930’s, explores the human need for company and the impact of loneliness. This is shown through the characters experiences of power and powerlessness on a barley ranch in California. Steinbeck shows his readers the need for compassion in times of cruelty, emphasised by the desperation of the era which the novel is set.
Short stories are temporary portals to another world; there is a plethora of knowledge to learn from the scenario, and lies on top of that knowledge are simple morals. Langston Hughes writes in “Thank You Ma’m” the timeline of a single night in a slum neighborhood of an anonymous city. This “timeline” tells of the unfolding generosities that begin when a teenage boy fails an attempted robbery of Mrs. Jones. An annoyed bachelor on a British train listens to three children their aunt converse rather obnoxiously in Saki’s tale, “The Storyteller”. After a failed story attempt, the bachelor tries his hand at storytelling and gives a wonderfully satisfying, inappropriate story. These stories are laden with humor, but have, like all other stories, an underlying theme. Both themes of these stories are “implied,” and provide an excellent stage to compare and contrast a story on.
Throughout this powerful novel, we observe the injustice in societal rejection and the pain caused by this. However, another extremely dominating theme involving the need for friendship surfaces again and again in all of the prominent characters. The Creature's isolation reveals the effects that loneliness can have when it is the strongest feeling in one's life. Taken as a whole, while the ability to care for oneself is important, people will always need someone to be there when the road gets rough.
Loneliness is the sadness resulting from being forsaken or abandoned. John Steinbeck brought up the theme of loneliness in many characters in Of Mice and Men. Crooks, Curley?s wife, and Candy expressed the theme of loneliness in many different forms throughout the story. Early in the novella George said, life working as ranch hands is about the loneliness of living, for these people finding friendship seems to be impossible. Crooks expressed feelings of loneliness throughout Of Mice and Men.
The most important theme that we can easily notice in the story is the lack of freedom, which is extremely significant to the American ideals, and Harrison demonstrates it as his escapes from jail, remove his handicaps, and influence others around him. In order to have a completely equal society in Harrison Bergeron’s world, people cannot choose what they want to take part in or what they are good at because if a person is above average in anything, even appearance, they are handicapped. These brain and body devices are implanted in an effort to make everyone equal. However, instead of raising everyone up to the better level, the government chooses instead to lower people to the lowest common level of human thought and action, which means that people with beautiful faces wear masks. Although the comparisons are well hidden, both today’s society and the story ‘Harrison Bergeron’ share similar qualities. They both deal with equality, which leads to problems and consequences. A second similarity is the struggle of competition and trying to prevent it from occurring, which also leads to problems. Lastly, both struggle with normality, and the fact that it’s hard to accept that different is okay now.
