A vignette from The House on Mango Street, "Those Who Don't," by Sandra Cisneros, the poem "My Parents Kept Me from Children Who Were Rough," by Stephen Spender, and another poem "We Real Cool," by Gwendolyn Brooks share many similarities and differences. These three pieces of literature talk about racism and rough children. "Those Who Don't" is about racism and how people think about others without getting to know them. "My Parents Kept Me from Children Who Were Rough" explains how a good child wants to be like other children who are bad. "We Real Cool" talks about pool players who are bad. These pieces of literature compare and contrast between figurative language, point of view, and theme.
The three pieces of literature are similar and different especially in point of view. "We Real Cool," is in the perspective of seven pool players who dropped out of school and lurk late. “We/ Left School. We/ Lurk late” (3 to 6) shows that the pool player think they are cool because they are being different from the other people who are in school. "My Parents Kept Me from Children Who Were Rough" is from the view of a boy who is influenced by the rough children in his neighborhood. “I feared more than tigers…” (5) shows that the boy was scared from the children. The boy wanted to be like those children in a way but knew that wasn’t a good choice. "Those Who Don't" is told in Ezperansa’s perspective. Esperanza lives in a neighborhood where there are good people, bad people and racist people. “They [different race] think we will attack with shiny knives” (Cisneros 28) explains that people who walk into a Latino race believe the Latinos would be bad. In "We Real Cool," the pool players shows isolation because they are only talking about themselves and don’t mention what people think of them. They are just within themselves. They are also all different because "Those Who Don't" is mainly about racism and the others are about rough children.
These pieces of literature are similar and different. Some of the pieces show roughness of children and views of racism. When people are judged about how the look or their type of personality is racism. Racism causes to think bad about different races so sometimes people think to stay away from one race because they might be very bad. Each piece stands in its own place for theme, point of view, and figurative language.
Christopher McCandless and Adam Shepard both did some similar targets in their lives, at the end it lead them to unexpected situations. Christopher McCandless was a young man who didn't believe in society and he chose to get away from that and left everything he had, including his family. He developed important relationships with key people that helped him on his journey into the wild. Similarly Adam Shepard was a young man who left with only $25 and a sleeping bag to go prove his point that the american dream does exist and to see if he can achieve it in a couple of months. Overall comparing McCandless and Shepard, Christopher McCandless had a greater impact in people, motivated many, and was selfish in plenty of good ways.

I felt it fitting to choose these two poems, as the first one is taken from “Poems for the living” and the second from “Poems for the dead.” This collection of poems explores the role of family within society, how through its dysfunction we can learn to exist as a person despite the odds. The collection helps Olds’ explore the truth about family and how we learn to eventually accept them, one way or another.
The book and movie “The Landlady” by Roald Dahl is about a young man called Billy Weaver who is looking for a bed and breakfast to stay for the night. He comes across a low priced hotel with a peculiar landlady who knows how to make an eerie night for her customers. The book and movie have two key differences and one important similarity. The setting in both the book and movie are different, changing the mood. The resolution is different which gives the reader/viewer an opposing view. Billy’s choice in the beginning of the story and movie gives the same plot. If any of these ideas had been the same between the movie and book, or had been changed, there would be contrasting thoughts from the reader/viewer.
Vladek and Guido use their skills and intelligence to endure a genocide that killed over 6 million Jews and 11 million people in total. Although sadly Guido did not make it through the Holocaust, his wife Dora and Son Giosué survived, thanks to the help of Guido. Vladek survived by using his many talents in the prison camps whereas Guido survived by his cunning intelligence and positive attitude. In the Books Maus I and II by Art Spiegelman, the author uses his fathers story of survival to create a book that unleashes vivid imagery of Vladeks time in Auschwitz, in addition to how it has affected him since. In the movie Life Is Beautiful Directed by Roberto Benigni, Guido was an average Jewish man living in Italy. When his family got taken to a Natzi death camp he managed to keep his son Giosué hidden, while doing so he jeopardized his own life. Both of these works display two brave men withstanding the worst race extermination in history.
In my Opinion I found The Most Dangerous Game better, of course they were both great stories but The Most Dangerous Game was more action filled. I liked how Sanger Rainsford used his skills to in the end beat General Zaroff.
Some people think that if they could only change one aspect of their lives, it would be perfect. They do not realize that anything that is changed could come with unintended consequences. “The Monkey’s Paw” by W.W. Jacobs and “The Third Wish” by Joan Aiken both illustrate this theme. They demonstrate this by granting the main character three wishes, but with each wish that is granted, brings undesirable consequences. The main idea of this essay is to compare and contrast “The Monkey’s Paw” and “The Third Wish.” Although the “The Monkey’s Paw” and “The Third Wish” are both fantasies and have similar themes, they have different main characters, wishes, and resolutions.
The stories Remembering My Childhood on the Continent of Africa and Self-Discovery and the Danish Way of Life are easily comparable. The narrators of both stories write about a time in which they are experiencing a different culture. They also write about their yearnings for self-discovery through exotic experiences. The viewpoints, however, of each writer are at opposite ends of the spectrum. In Self-Discovery and the Danish Way of Life, the narrator writes about his international experiences while studying abroad in Denmark. On the other hand, in Remembering My Childhood on the Continent of Africa, the narrator never actually visits Africa. Instead, he figuratively visits the continent through the experiences of another person. These stories may appear to be similar because of the comparable aspirations of the narrators. However, they are also different with respect the narrators’ unique viewpoints on life.
My daughter Myla Jane and her cousin Braelyn Jade are different in appearance and attitudes, yet are the same in the things that they enjoy and their daily routine of everyday life. When you look at the two girls, you can’t tell by their looks that they would be anything alike. Although they are a lot different in looks, they do share similarities. When seeing these girls at a back-to-back view, the only things that you would find to be similar are their enjoyment of the same things and their routine they follow throughout the day.
While some differences between Ventura College and the colleges that Andrew Hacker and Claudia Dreifus wrote about in their essay are evident, the similarities are salient. Ventura College meets the characteristics that Hacker and Dreifus described in their essay, Ventura College has a low tuition rates, small class sizes, and all students have access to counselors and instructors. The only difference between Ventura College and the colleges that Hacker and Dreifus talked about is funding. Ventura College doesn’t cost a lot of money to attend, but is experience it provides actually worth the price?
College writing has numerous aspects. Successful College Writing by Kathleen T. McWhorter does well in covering many of those aspects. Consisting of a good deal of example essays, Successful College Writing helps students learn about the different parts of making a quality formal essay. Some of the example essays in the book work hand-in-hand in getting points across. Two that work well together are Dearly Disconnected by Ian Frazier and Is Sharing Files Online Killing Music? by Jonathan Adamczak. Both display how to write about topics like change. Since the two essays have similar writing styles and topics, it would do a student well to review them.
Prince Henry of Portugal, more commonly known as Henry the Navigator, and Zheng He, a successful Chinese admiral, were both extremely accomplished men throughout the 14th and 15th centuries. During this era, many accomplished explorers ventured out into the ocean and discovered new lands, two of the most important men being Henry the Navigator and Zheng He. Although both men came from different backgrounds, their contrasting societies and structures affected the way in which they regarded economic and political expansion and also their contact with other cultures. Societies like the Chinese and Portuguese had many cultural differences such as their different religions. The Chinese practiced neo-Confucianism whereas the Portuguese were Christians which was one of the many purposes of their exploration, to spread Christianity. There were also many cultural similarities between the two societies such as their long lasting histories and their explorer’s curiosity to seek out to new lands, which resulted the two societies in having different views on economic and political expansion and contact with other cultures. Both Confucian and Christian ideologies favored those who worked over the wealthy. Thus, to a larger extent, the structures and values of a society have an extensive impact on the way people view economic and political expansion and contact with other cultures.
Poems are often designed to express deep feelings and thoughts about a particular theme. In Theodore Roethke’s poem, My Papa’s Waltz, and Ruth Whitman’s poem, Listening to grownups quarreling, the theme of childhood is conveyed through their details, although we can neither see a face nor hear a voice. These poems are very much alike in their ideas of how their memories pertain to the attitudes of their childhood; however, the wording and tones of the two poems are distinct in how they present their memories. The two poems can be compared and contrasted through the author’s use of tone, imagery, and recollection of events; which illustrate each author’s memories of childhood.
