One Writer;two tragedies and two really different murderers. William Shakespeare's Hamlet and Macbeth are generally common tragedies. Hamlet and Macbeth successfully deal with the need for royal power and its bad after effects.This essay examines the probable corollary that a tragic villain may possess and or including characteristics that may be on the same passing level with the tragic-heroes. Being hero-villains, Macbeth and Claudius present similarities.Both of them are magnanimous,driven by ambition,suffer internally,lack conscience and smart. Their demise brings down the kingdom,particularly in the case of Claudius since no one in his royal family survived as heir so Fortinbras, the prince of Norway takes the throne. In Macbeth's case right heir regains the power. The bodies filling the stage at the end of both tragedies is just a consequence of the fall of the mighty. Macbeth is the primary reason behind the death of Duncan, Banquo,Lady Macduff and her child. He becomes the incidental reason behind the death of Lady Macbeth.Likewise, Claudius is the primary reason behind the death of the Old King Hamlet, but becomes the incidental reason behind the death of Polonius, Ophelia, Laertes, Gertrude and Hamlet. Macbeth and Claudius have psychological pain that goes beyond their physical pain. Macbeth's mental pain results hallucination,insomnia and nightmares. Claudius does not have any hallucination, but he undergoes misery,solitude, and exclusion.
