Community Service Essay

I did two separate community service projects in order to complete my four required hours: I taught some of my mother’s young Girl Scout troops about first aid and an award a Girl Scout can earn called the Gold Award, and I helped pack bags at the Pulaski Food Pantry. My mother is the head of our local Girl Scout council, the Howard/Suamico Pulaski service unit, and so she often takes over troops of elementary girls when no other moms will volunteer to be a leader. I help her out a lot at her meetings when I have time. The bag packing at the pantry, however, was organized through Spanish Club. I needed more service hours, and I thought it wouldn't be too hard to fit those into my busy schedule. During my first two service hours with the Girl Scouts, my mother picked me up after school and we drove to the elementary school right next to Bay Port to meet one of my mother’s young Girl Scout troops. The girls were about seven years old or so, and they were eager to learn about the steps you would take to have a safe household and what to do if something were to happen that required medical treatment. Until these people can get back on their feet and into a stable financial situation again, a good citizen should give them a helping hand and try to lift them up. Even simple things such as dropping a dollar in each Salvation Army kettle can make a difference, along with community service such as the bag packing I did at the pantry. If everybody helped out one another, we wouldn’t have such a high unemployment rate in the United States and perhaps we could flourish more as a country. Community service can also build character in a person and help make people all around into more caring and considerate citizens of
