What does diversity and community mean to you? Diversity is an observation of a mixture of different races, cultural backgrounds, and perspectives within a large mass of people. This observation is significant because people of different backgrounds are able to approach a single questionable situation in several different ways. Today, we are able to see diversity within the mist of large and small communities. A community is a group of people who interacts with one another, share commonalities, and tends to have a sense of empowerment once they’re united. It is important to recognize that we, as Bruins, are all culturally unique but also share commonalities. UCLA as a whole has a broad spectrum of students and faculty with different cultural backgrounds. This characteristic is what makes UCLA diverse in the eyes of many. However, many students do not realize that although we have different cultural backgrounds, we do share several underlining issues. These issues may be global controversies that continue to make its way into the media and requires a union between different cultures to properly address. The process of coming together as one is the creation of a community. There have been several incidents over the years at UCLA that drove students of different cultural backgrounds to come together as a community. Our diverse community is what gives us a stronger foundation because not only are we looking at the issues from different perspectives but we’re showing everyone the vitality of cultural unification.
