Many people have different ways of absorbing information. Whether it is work, school, or recreational activities, people learn in various ways at different paces. According to Howard Gardner, a professor from Harvard University, there are eight unique intelligences everyone possesses. (Gardner, 1993) After completing the Multiple Pathways to Learning assessment, three traits stood out as moderately to highly developed.
The Bodily-Kinesthetic intelligence champions the ability to process information through physical activity. While reading a manual is informative, conducting experiments, using sensory deduction and collecting information by using the connection between the mind and the body provides a cohesive bond between memory and practical application. I find that my ability to absorb information increase if the instruction can be physically manipulated.
The Logical-Mathematical intelligence realizes my need to understand how things work. Problem solving and deductive reasoning is a staple to understanding this intelligence trait. I am drawn to technology because of the logic and reasoning that is needed to execute the actions or commands required for computers and other electronic devices. The basis of Logical-Mathematical intelligence is a scientific understanding of intricate patterns and complex calculations.
For deductive reasoning and problems solving to take place an Intrapersonal intelligence must be present. The Intrapersonal intelligence trait focuses on self-introspection and self-improvement. Groups with different learning styles and personality types can work well with each other if all members consider their strengths and weaknesses. All individuals must learn to embrace diversity if collaboration and communication is to be effective. No matter how many talents a person possesses, if mutual consideration for all is not taken, the group is no more than just fragments of a puzzle. This is why learning styles and personality types are defined to give a clearer view of what an individual is truly capable of. With a clearer view, everyone can see their own value in a team.
