Common schools versus modern schools.
They trekked from one planet to the other, in search for the ideal one. The determined seekers had to cross numerous borderlines and have their visas stamped by the immigration officers such as the puritans, evangelicals, Horace Mann, and John Dewey. Some planets presented unfavorable conditions which made them feel like life was such a misery. Some hope was shed in Horace Mann’s planet, but the zealous explorers wanted to know what the next planet had I offer. Their experience made so far created there is always a greener pasture pattern of thinking. Finally, they got to earth, a comparatively small planet with attractive features such as gravity which made them move freely. It was such a sad discovery
She had a chance to communicate with Shayang her great grandmother. Their conversations revolved around the most unifying factor between the two which was education. It was clear that Zora strongly disapproved with some of the debates over the common schools by sharply asking Shayang, “Why would they insist on using religion to teach morals?” religious differences between the Catholics and Protestants. Each region wanted their children to stick to its practices and they felt that the common school threatened the children’s religious background. To solve this, they argued that each of the sect should be given its financial share to run their own schools. They thought that the children’s moral will not be upheld in common schools. Zora would not stop thinking on the meaning of morals because according to her morals are not necessarily gained through religion. However, she feels like the common schools were keener on education for all than the modern schools which she is attending especially in enforcing of rules and regulations. These schools do not receive unilateral decisions on the implementation of policies. Each body that funds them gives its own commands to be adhered to. Thus, the federal, the state, the school boards and the district superintendents exert their demands on the schools. Zora wishes that all these units of control would just focus on one goal of upgrading the public schools. Tears
Her answer is what old ,life experienced people would naturally say; all is well life is not all about education. Zoral vivdly knows in her planet, education greatly determines one’s life style and as far as she is concerned she acquired crappy education. Blame game is what ensues in Zora’s conversation with her grandma. She starts by blaming the teachers who showed no commitment in their work soon they received their tenure track. ‘Why can’t they be laid off?’ asks Shayng surprisingly. ‘The teacher’s union protects them!’ replies Zora. Shayang is the kind of a person who believes in alternatives and she was no hesitant to ask Zora if there wasn’t any other way she could have achieved better education despite their poverty. The question wreaked havoc on Zora’s mind recalling the fateful day when she missed her chance to join the Charter Schools since the lottery did not pick on her name. She wished that she lived in the little hill neighborhood which had good teachers and the students performed well but sadly only the Little Hill resident’s children could access the school. Each level of education raised Zora’s frustration. The consistent multiple choice examinations were not enough to improve on her intelligence. According to Shayang, education is an evolving entity. As a common school alumni, she recalls some of the challenges that face the Horace Mann system of education. Some families argued against paying tuition
