An Introduction of the Topic
The Common Core State Standards are simply learning goals that are outlined for the students. This outline is a way to show the students what they should be able to do at the end of each grade. These learning goals are supposed to “provide a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn so teachers and parents know what they need to do to help them” (Top Ten Things to Know, 2015). These certain standards are also supposed to be designed to be “robust and relevant to the real world, reflecting the knowledge and skills that our young people need for success in the near future” (Top Ten Things to Know, 2015). Common Core State Standards were actually being introduced while I was attending Stephens County High School. Not only did it greatly affect me and the other students, but it also affected the administration, teachers, our community, and our parents.
Historical Overview
Common Core State Standards has been a significant topic since 2009. Common Core was launched by state leaders and commissioners of education as well as governors from forty-eight states in 2009. However, the topic of common standards was actually being discussed in November of 2007 in Columbus, Ohio by state chiefs. In December 2008, “Benchmarking for Success: Ensuring U.S. Students Receive a World-Class Education” was released by the National Governors Association, the Council of Chief State School Officers, and Achieve, Inc. This specific report was a recommendation to all states to “upgrade state standards by adopting a common core of internationally benchmarked standards in math and language arts for grades K-12 to ensure that students are equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to be globall...

...ach student should know by the end of each grade level and to describe the skills that each student should acquire in order to be college or career ready. However, “for decades now, students in different states have been taught different material at different rates and held to radically different standards” (Porter-Magee, K, 2015). I recommend that all states adopt the Common Core State
Standards so that every student will be learning the same concepts simultaneously. The Common Core Standards are not considered a curriculum, therefore the way each standard is taught can still be different because “it is up to the school districts to choose curricula that comply with the standards” (Porter-Magee, K, 2015). With this, all students will then have the same opportunity to engage in a more rigorous, and content-rich, setting, while being held to the same high standards.
