The Common Core Standards

“The Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts & Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science, and Technical Subjects (“the Standards”) are the culmination of an extended, broad-based effort to fulfill the charge issued by the states to create the next generation of K–12 standards in order to help ensure that all students are college and career ready in literacy no later than the end of high school.” http://ccss.lausd.net/content/science. The reason for the change is due to the fact that the state standards were too vague and too long to drive instruction.

The Common Core was designed to be a set of standards with fewer in number yet clearer in describing outcomes, which all students are expected to attain. These standards are organized in a way that will give a sense of connectedness of each grade. To help students achieve these standards, teachers must create a scope and sequence about what needs to be taught along with a pacing guide to keep them on track. A difficulty for teachers is to decide what NOT to teach from existing curriculum. Teachers sometimes get caught up in lessons or activities that they like and the students like even though it may not be in the curriculum. “So, the Common Core State Standards are not adding more work for teachers but allowing them the “power of the eraser” over the “power of the pen.” (Sandra M. Alberti, 2012, p.4)

Teachers have not always believed that they are reading teachers. For example, a social studies teacher or math teacher may only focused on their discipline, not necessarily spending time on teaching reading. ... future, I foresee students sharing their answers not only with their classmates but with the global community. This will influence my future instruction and student learning by putting more pressure on me to address the demands of technology. No longer will the teacher or books hold all the information. Students will navigate through material and information to learn skills and concepts that will serve students for a lifetime in world that continues to change
