The Common Core initiative is a reform for public schools in an attempt to become unified within their teaching methods, teaching structure and curriculum. Currently, “45 states and the District of Columbia” (Common Core Meets Education Reform 206) have fully implemented the program altering the course of Education as American’s know it. Despite what many believe, the Common Core initiative does not mandate what each school must teach. Common Core outlines skills and knowledge the students should know and develop throughout each grade level from Kindergarten through twelfth grade. The ultimate goal of this reform is to ensure each student is fully prepared for college and the working world. The Common Core initiative is reshaping U.S. schools …show more content…
The Common Core initiative is unlike traditional methods; it provides students the tools they need to face real-world problems in swiftly and easily. Instead of just mindlessly memorizing the answer, students are now expected to show how they came to the answer. “The Common Core was developed by building on the best state standards in the United States; examining the expectations of other high-performing countries around the world” (Common Core State Standards Initiative 4). Mathematics has encompassed the biggest change seen in this reform. Students now have to understand and explain why a formula works; whereas previously, students could just down a previously memorized answer. In Writing classes, students don’t just compose an essay with just three main points in the introduction and a description of each point in the following paragraphs. With the Common Core initiative, students needs to ask a series of questions to themselves and then proceed to answer them. A big change in Reading class is the now students will be focusing more on nonfiction work. By fourth grade, all students implementing the reform will split their reading 50-50 with fiction and nonfiction. By their senior year in high school, in all subject areas, the readings will be 70 percent nonfiction. All of these changes are for the greater good of education, the United States and it’s
Forty-two states have adopted Common Core State Standards. These standards were created to focus only on English and Mathematics. In effect of states adopting Common Core Standards, all other subjects taught in school seemed less important. History and Science standards are no longer stressed. Students are limited to being proficient in only two subjects. The Common Core deprives students’ ability to be skilled in multiple areas. These standards do not provide a slight “break” from the challenging fast past teaching of English and Mathematics. In addition to limiting education to English and Mathematics, Jill Bowden explains that the Common Core is affecting kindergarteners by taking “away from materials that encourage playful learning.” (36).
With the common core standards students now will be able to transfer schools and understand what is going on because the Common Core Standard provides a clear understanding to all students of what they are expected to learn. It will provide all of the students with an equal opportunity to learn same curriculum no matter which school they are going to. These standards will not limit the students with different level of achievement among students; instead they will ensure a more consistent exposure to materials and learning experience though instructions and teacher preparation. However, two c...
Increase in Knowledge. The Common Core standards, promote critical thinking as well as thinking analytically. Common Core challenges students to critically think rather than guessing which multiple choice answer is correct or the memorization of the correct answer. These standards are meant to get the student to fully understand what they are learning while also having the ability to elaborate on the topic if necessary. The difference between the original standards and common core standard is that old standards concentrated on the memorization of facts while the new standards focuses on the development of critical and analytical thinking skills.
Of the teachers I have spoken with most have agreed that the common core has been rushed, with not enough time and/or money to adequately prepare. The goal was a noble one – to have the United States a global leader in education. But the curriculum was basically just dumped in the teacher’s laps. Testing the system in a select few school districts would have been a better way to gradually implement the new curriculum.
The duo of Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and 21st century skillset allows for positive results in the teachers delivery methods and the information the student retains. The combination allows for problem solving, critical thinking, and the promotion of social skill. The partnership also increases the retention of data thus allowing for student success. It utilizes test and quizzes to measure the retention of knowledge. The program also integrates cognitive learning into the curriculum which allows the student to have a deeper understanding of material while gaining the ability to problem solve real world problems.
Common core is not a new method. America has set standards since at least the 1950’s and many schools have since then implemented a curriculum supporting this ideal. These standards in language arts and mathematics are supposed to help the nation prepare students for college and their future careers. The effects of common core, both positive and negative, lead to the debate on whether or not it should still be implemented in schools today, but thanks to federal funding it has made it hard to get rid of the program. It is because of this that the governor of Louisiana, Bobby Jindal has decided to sue the federal government for violating the 10th amendment. Although many can agree that having standardized goals gives both the students and staff
Children are taught many new concepts and ideas in a variety of different ways. It is every teachers dream to give each child a quality education. Children attending school deserves a quality education and should be inspired by a great teacher. With thousands of American schools labeled as “failing”, could the No Child Left Behind Act be a law that every school needs in order to be successful.
What most teachers struggle with most is not rowdy children or angry parents. The biggest issue is Common Core which is legislation that creates standards for students and teachers made by people in Washington D.C. with no experience in the field of education. In fact, these individuals not only set standards for schools that are not doing well, but force schools that are doing well to adhere to standards that come from men in suits, not teachers or educators. The Cold War is the reason that Common Core exists because the United States and the Soviet Union fought with education, technological advancement, and scientific achievement. This was exemplified in the Space Race and Spencer Gregg, a well renowned Historian who wrote “Crisis in Education—The
It was born out of the alarm that the 2001 No Child Left Behind law had lowered the standards on what students were learning since the law allowed states to design their own tests and curricula. The Common Core Standards is a set of high-quality academic standards in mathematics, writing and reading. Its learning goals frame what a student should learn and be able to do through PK-12th grade at the end of each academic year to ensure all students that graduate high schools have the skills necessary to thrive in college, work environment and in general (Baker, 2014, p.
“To ensure all students are ready for success after high school, the Common Core State Standards establish clear, consistent guidelines for what every student should know and be able to do in math and English language arts from kindergarten through 12th grade” (What Parents Should Know, n.d.). Children are entering a world that is requiring more and more than before. Society is changing meaning education must change to keep up with society. “The standards were drafted by experts and teachers from across the country and are designed to ensure students are prepared for today’s entry-level careers, freshman-level college courses, and workforce training programs” (What Parents Should Know, n.d.). The focus is to allow students to think critically and be able to problem solve; skills needed in life. The Common Core State Standards are also providing ways for teachers to track each student’s progress as they grow and learn throughout the year. Common Core has many good qualities, but nothing is perfect. There will always be issues no matter the
The Common Core State Standards are simply learning goals that are outlined for the students. This outline is a way to show the students what they should be able to do at the end of each grade. These learning goals are supposed to “provide a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn so teachers and parents know what they need to do to help them” (Top Ten Things to Know, 2015). These certain standards are also supposed to be designed to be “robust and relevant to the real world, reflecting the knowledge and skills that our young people need for success in the near future” (Top Ten Things to Know, 2015). Common Core State Standards were actually being introduced while I was attending
American education has been falling behind the world for some time now and the US government has come up with an idea that they believe will put us back in the race. This idea is called common core and it has been taken nation wide, and majority of all states have accepted this new education curriculum for math and science. Florida has accepted common core but changed the name to The Florida Standards to lower the disapproval from the citizens of this state, but that is not enough. The Florida Standards are not good for us and are to much on our students.
Furthermore, the Common Core State Standards provides the opportunity for teachers to increase their proficiency in teaching students to enhance their understanding and articulation of a wide range of topics that would be beneficial towards their post educational life experiences as reflected in the amount of states that have increased their overall educational grade. Due to a current rise in critical thinking skills needed in today’s society, there has been an increase in the necessity for well-developed critical thinking skills amongst adults who wish to be successive and become a productive member of society and it starts with elementary school and continues into college with the Common Core State Standards. By accepting the Common Core State Standards, schools have the chance to gain access grants to be used in incorporating the standards, making updates to the educational infrastructure, and alleviates the costs associated with adopting the Common Core State Standards. If a state has not adopted the Common Core State Standards and the current State Standards do not meet or exceed the Common Core, than it may be in the best interest of the

(2014) exclaimed that why do 62 percent of parents think the Common Core is not perfect for their kids, despite it has fascinated some entrepreneurs such as Bill Gates and the secretary of education. In a case in point, parents should get more involved in the education of their children if they do not approve of measures being used. She agrees to the idea of a federal government using incentives to adopt their specific education program, but then again she only sees that parents complaining and not taking action. In another context, “parents have no choice about whether their kids will learn Common Core, no matter what school they put them in, if they want them to go to college, because the SAT and ACT are being redesigned to fit the new national program for education”. (Pullmann, J. 2014, September 24, p. 1). In fact, Porter (1989) states that the Common Core standards became as opposing to teachers and teaching occupation, and the tactics are not good strong enough for enabling teachers to be dependent. The teacher is often understood to be the planned without rules. Moreover, some voices against the criticism of the common core, they believe that it is meaningless because districts are still permitted to select which material goes out with stem the basis stated by the Common Core
