Roberto Benigni's moving film, Life is Beautiful, is a film that is set in a concentration camp and combines comedy with the seriousness of the extermination of the Jews in Nazi Germany during the Holocaust. In Life is Beautiful, the real purpose of the film, is a love story on many levels. It is a tale about a man and his “principessa”, a man and his son, a man and his life. It is a tale about choosing how to exist and choosing how to die. The movie was primarily made for entertainment, using the Holocaust as its setting.
Despite the film’s failed attempt to really capture the seriousness of the Holocaust, certain details still appear to be accurate. The removal of clothing at the arrival at the concentration camp, the showers, the separating of the families, the lack of food, and the unnecessary gassing of hundreds of Jews, are clearly shown throughout the movie just as it occurred years before. Guido, the main character, is sent to part from his beloved wife, and taken to the other side of the camp with his son. Wanting to keep the truth away from his son, he explains...
One accuracy shown in the movie is how and why Jews were killed. Nazi’s were absolutely ruthless when it came to killing Jews. For example, men tried escaping the camp, and they were immediately killed. This is the same as what happens in history because just like in the movie Jews were killed on the spot by guards at camps for trying to escape. Jews were also killed for simply breaking the rules without hesitation by Nazis.
What Gerda wrote was real not a writer using people’s stories to make one. But when people make their own stories about the Holocaust, they could use Gerda’s as an example because she wrote the book so well and detailed that I thought that I was there with her. I think Gerda did an amazing job writing this book and putting so much work and detail into it. I’ve concluded that I even have a different perspective on the Holocaust. The Holocaust was a horrible thing, and although I have read several books, this one was real and not sugar coated. I know now what the Jews and many others went through and how much they suffered. I think that what surprised me the most was that the SS locked the Jews in the factory with the bomb. They had to be heartless to do that to anybody. Everything they did in general from the horrible food (bread and coffee) they gave them to the jobs they have them (flax detail). Beautifully tragic, have you ever thought about what exactly happened during the Holocaust times. Well this review will walk you through how it was like to be taken from your home and watch it burn as you drive away, this will tell you how people who were Jews were treated just because they had a different religion. This will show the tragedies that happened leaving millions dead like they just vanished off the face of the earth.
He recreated the images of destruction and showed the cruelty used against the victims of the Holocaust, “Without passion, without haste, they [the Nazi soldiers] slaughtered their prisoners. Each one had to go up to the hole and present his neck. Babies were thrown into the air and the machine gunners used them as targets,” (4). After reading his narrative, readers could not dispute the occurrence of the Holocaust, as no one could conjure up images of such horror and evil. He described their displacement in such a way that people couldn’t even imagine, only those who had experienced it could explain the internal reasoning of the victims.
Now, Life is Beautiful is a very serious film. There are constant reminders of what time period the film is set in. The time of Hitler, a period of great racism towards the Jewish people. Guido knows very much about the current events, but continues to shelter his young son. We are reminded of the times with the painting of the horse. The words “Jewish Horse” are painted onto a horse that was also painted green. All of the images of the concentration camps make our spines chill as we realize and remember that hundreds of thousands of human beings had to live, and die in camps much like the one in the film. The countryside at the beginning of the film is also a great realistic moment in history—Mussolini riding into a town, the townspeople greeting him with open arms.
Imagine having to live behind the close fences of a concentration camp and endeavor for survival. From January 30, 1933 to May 8, 1945, the Holocaust was the methodical, bureaucratic, state-supported mistreatment and homicide by the Nazi administration and its colleagues. Specified by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, approximately six million Jews were butchered due to the Nazis blaming them for Germany’s failures. The Jew’s experiences range from the release of extreme propaganda, opening of concentration camps, Kristallnacht, their civil liberties dwindling away, and what the remaining prisoners had suffered through to survive the end of the war.
The Holocaust was a very impressionable period of time. It not only got media attention during that time, but movies, books, websites, and other forms of media still remember the Holocaust. In Richard Brietman’s article, “Lasting Effects of the Holocaust,” he reviews two books and one movie that were created to reflect the Holocaust (BREITMAN 11). He notes that the two books are very realistic and give historical facts and references to display the evils that were happening in concentration camps during the Holocaust. This shows that the atrocities that were committed during the Holocaust have not been forgotten. Through historical writings and records, the harshness and evil that created the Holocaust will live through centuries, so that it may not be repeated again (BREITMAN 14).

Bomba explained how people would walk through the “gate” and was never seen again. His job, along with sixteen or so other prisoners was to clean up the place so that when the next transport comes in, they would not see what was going on. His experience is very similar to the experience described by Mr. Mueller. Although they were in different camps, they were the experiencing the same torment. Ms. Farkas was deported to the Auschwitz camp where she worked in the kitchens to receive extra food. She was deported to another camp and later forced on a death march. Her experience is also very similar to Mr. Mueller’s. Toward the end of the war, he describes how he and other prisoners were forced on a death march. The Boy in the Striped Pajamas indirectly shows that there is no survival from the camp. Shmuel tells Bruno how his grandparents died shortly after arriving at the camp and later asks Bruno to help him look for his father because he hadn’t seen him a few days. Unbeknownst to Shmuel and Bruno, his father had already suffered the fate of the gas chamber. I cannot imagine the pain and suffering Mr. Mueller, Mr. Bomba and Ms. Farkas endured to live to tell their stories. It is hard to believe the cruelty they experienced at hands of other human beings. Director Mark Herman presents a narrative film that attests to the brutal, thought-provoking Nazi regime, in war-torn Europe. It is obvious that with Herman’s relatively clean representation of this era, he felt it was most important to resonate with the audience in a profound and philosophical manner rather than in a ruthlessness infuriating way. Despite scenes that are more graphic than others, the films objective was not to recap on the awful brutality that took place in camps such as the one in the movie. Primo Levi was an Italian Jewish Anti-fascist who was arrested in 1943, during the Second World War. The memoir, “If this is a Man”, written immediately after Levi’s release from the Auschwitz concentration camp, not only provides the readers with Levi’s personal testimony of his experience in Auschwitz, but also invites the readers to consider the implications of life in the concentration camp for our understanding of human identity. In Levi’s own words, the memoir was written to provide “documentation for a quiet study of certain aspects of the human mind”. The lack of emotive words and the use of distant tone in Levi’s first person narration enable the readers to visualize the cold, harsh reality in Auschwitz without taking away the historical credibility. Levi’s use of poetic and literary devices such as listing, repetition, and symbolism in the removal of one’s personal identification; the use of rhetorical questions and the inclusion of foreign languages in the denial of basic human rights; the use of bestial metaphors and choice of vocabulary which directly compares the prisoner of Auschwitz to animals; and the use of extended metaphor and symbolism in the character Null Achtzehn all reveal the concept of dehumanization that was acted upon Jews and other minorities.
