Each year from fall to spring, the influenza virus (also known as the flu) sneaks up in the community and if not protected by the flu vaccine there may be serious consequences. According to Lee, E, C., Vibound, C., Simonsen, L., Khan., F., and Bansal, S. (2015), each year due to the flu, around 200,000 people were hospitalized and around 49,000 people lost their lives. Mc Hugh et al. (2015) explained the flu is a respiratory virus that spreads easily from person to person, causing mild or severe illness dependent on the age and health of the individual. The most effective way to prevent the flu is immunization through the vaccine. There are also other precautions that can be taken. Since 2010 the Centers for the Disease Control and Prevention has recommended everyone 6 months and older getting vaccinated yearly. The vaccine takes two weeks to become effective, but having the immunity against the strains of the flu for the season will lessen the chances of catching the virus.
Sanders (2015), described the influenza virus as a highly evolved, rapidly mutating pathogen. Scientists have to make an educated guess on what strains will prevail several months in advance of use. Lee et al. (2015), explained there are three types of the flu: A, B, and C, with each having many strains. Strain A of the flu virus is said to have caused the flu epidemic of 1918, killing more than 20 million people. The viruses change from year to year, therefore, annual vaccinations are recommended to fight against the newest strains.
Lee et al. (2015) stated the flu is contagious from about one day before a person begins showing signs of illness until five...

...ave an allergic reaction to the flu shot due to the viruses in the shot being grown in eggs. Stated in “Why Your Yearly Flu Shot Matters” (2001) years ago the vaccine had impurities and caused side effects of fever, headache, and tiredness, because of the similarity to the symptoms of the flu people believed the flu shot actually caused the flu. This is not possible since the viruses used in the vaccine are inactive or dead and are no longer able to cause the flu.
Although some people may not accept the vaccine it is the most effective way to prevent the flu. The whole family should be vaccinated to decrease the chances of family members getting the flu. There can be serious illnesses due to the flu if not vaccinated. The vaccine is widely available to the public and provided at any medical office. The vulnerable population is highly recommended to be vaccinated.
