In 2013, full-time workers between the ages of 25-34 with a bachelor’s degree, on
average, earned 62 percent more than workers without one (Fast Facts). Despite these statistics,
in her essays Caroline Bird refutes the idea that college can lead to financial gain. For both,
College is a Waste of Time And Money and The Case Against College Bird argues that college is
only for the previously academically inclined student. Furthermore, she goes on to state her
beliefs that students are sad, oppressed and that they are only at college because it has become an
escape from the “real world.” However, the institution of higher learning holds great merit in the

This is quite contradictory to the idea behind going to college. In fact,
most, if not all, students enter college to be of more use to the economy in the future. They spend
their years of study learning various skills and techniques to help them earn a career. A high
school graduate who begins a full-time job at the age of eighteen may be able to offer a minor

monetary contribution, however a learned individual can have a much greater economic impact.
Although, during their years of study, students are of indirect value to the economy, the schools
and the government are investing in their future. They are not escaping their economic duties.
Students are offered a delay of service so they can be of greater use in the future.
Much of this delay is allowed by a parent or parents supporting their student through their
entire college career. An aspect which Bird seems to despise. She states that most students either
go to college to leech off their parents for at least four years, or their parents force them to attend
school because parents think it is best (Bird 12). Although some students might attend college

In “Two Years Are Better than Four”, Liz Addison argues against Rick Perlstein’s article “What’s the Matter With College?”. While Perlstein questions the value of college as it currently is, Addison argues that the “community college system is America’s hidden public service gem”(Addison 257). By way of that, she defends the value of college. Unsurprisingly, as with most situations, the truth is somewhere in between ends of a spectrum created by these two articles. While I agree with Addison’s idea of community college being an accessible starting point for everyone, she fails to appropriately represent the unique culture often found in these types of colleges. Also, I think that she also fails to look at the overall purpose of attending school and then neglects to acknowledge the benefits of a four year university.
Murray believes that students should receive a liberal education, yet they should not have to wait until college to do so (Murray 225). Murray states that a person should not be forced to obtain a college-level liberal education, simply because they are capable of doing so (Murray 228). On higher education, Murray says, “A large proportion of people who are theoretically able to absorb a liberal education have no interest in doing so.” (Murray 228). Regardless of the fact that a person fits the criteria enabling them to pursue a college degree, does not necessarily mean that they should, if they are not interested. It is more logical to teach students extensively before the time of college, instead of leaving out information and forcing them to attend a school (Murray 225). However, Addison disagrees with this ideology, and believes that a college education is essential to growing up.
The argument about whether college is worth it or not has been one of the biggest arguments throughout the media for decades. Students suffer a lot from the debts that they get from college and also the amount of studying that they do in college and when they graduate they ask themselves “is graduation from college really worth all the money that we paid and all the work that we have done?”. Leonhardt and Matthews are two journalists who talk about whether college is really worth it or not, and they both have different perspectives. David Leonhardt thinks that college is absolutely worth all the money you pay and the work you do, stating that “Americans with fouryear college degrees made 98 percent more an hour on average in 2013 than people without a degree.
America’s future lies in the youth and building an educated youth that is interested in their career would benefit society. Rising college tuition is hurting the higher education of America. As more financial pressure is placed on these kids, the more they aren’t able to focus on their goals and dreams. Although inflation is a problem, the students who are able to graduate will benefit society if they worry more about their job. They should be able to satisfy their duty in society and a rise in college tuition will hinder that vision substantially.
The biggest question or dispute regarding the cost of higher education is finding the appropriate monetary and economical equation to determine the percentage of personal and public responsibility. Linda Lee, the author of “The Case against college”, uses rhetorical devices to sway the readers opinions. Most people can agree college is very important, while others have different opinions. Lee believes not everyone needs a higher education. She is forgetting the reason college is so important and why so many people receive a college education. Everyone should attend college, college graduates make more money, have more job opportunities, become more independent, and have more stability.
