70 percent of Americans will attend a four year university, two thirds will graduate from those universities. Additionally, 30 percent of college students will drop out after their first year (¨Statistics of a College¨). Caroline Bird, the author of “College is a Waste of Time and Money,” was born in 1915 and later attended the University of Toledo as well as the University of Wisconsin. Bird then became a journalist during World War ll and wrote several books on women 's rights. She was soon being called one of the “founding mothers” for feminists ("CAROLINE BIRD 's Obituary”). In 1975 she published an article entitled “College is a Waste of Time and Money” which states critical opinions on the industry of college, the article but was published over four decades ago. College is an enormous decision for many high school students, and for some, it is the only place to go after the high school. In the article, “College is a Waste of Time and Money,” by Caroline Bird, presents many valid points about why college is not worth the debt and time, however, the article needs to be modernized.
Caroline Bird believes college is not for everyone and further states “that college is the best place for all high school graduates grew out of a noble American ideal,” (Bird, Par 3). This demonstrates the expectation for high school graduates to advance on to college. However, once students enroll in a university, many find that college is not the place for them. Bird considers college a “sentence to be served,” comparing students to prisoners in jail (Par 14). Despite the outdated information in Caroline Birdś article, “College is a Waste of Time and Money,” she presents a valid argument explaining why college may not be worth the commitment. The reliability of her article depends on her extensive research. After interviewing hundreds of university students, their opinions confirmed her belief that college is not the place for everyone. High school curriculum is centered around college preparation, which leads students to believe that college is their only option. It needs to be realized that not every 18 year old wants to go to college and they should not be expected to do so. College should be a path for students that have a strong desire to further their education in order to get a specific career.
