In the old schooling system about the time of World War I and II and afterwards, college education was provided to get people prepared for the work force, and they were only taught the skills necessary for their line of work. Students were not required to have any miscellaneous knowledge including classes like critical thinking or art classes, but they were rather meant to get in and out of school as quickly as possible.
