College athletes not receiving money is a very important civic issue. It is a debate that has been going on for the last couple of years and will continue to be an issue until a compromise is made. Many athletes are given scholarships, which allows them to easily dedicate their time to sports. However, there are others that may not have received any scholarships, which would lead to a long and stressful athletic experience. It is hard for many people to understand why this is a big deal for athletes because of their lack of knowledge on how dedicated and time restricted most athletes are. It is important when taking a side on this topic to be able to understand the history of scholarships and how times have changed. In 1905, President Theodore Roosevelt helped cre-ate the NCAA. At the time, it was created to implement safety measures in college sports and also became the foundation for recruitment. It was not until 1950 that scholarships were intro-duced. At the early stages of scholarships, schools only gave large scholarships based on ticket sales (Gilleran, 2013). Back then, scholarships where huge and athletes were receiving full tuition for their abilities. The only difference between then and now is that athletes in the 50’s were not training year round like today’s athletes do. This made it easy for the players in the 50’s to get a job to pay for extra circular actives and to make payments. Many athletes today have little to no time to get a job, which makes college life very strenuous. This is a major civic issue that con-cerns not only the athletes, but the families of those athletes who are unable to help and provide for their son or daughter.
