My life revolves around doing work that is rewarding. If I didn't do work that was rewarding, I don't think I would be at what I consider one of the highest points in my life. I feel there is no purpose if there is no reward. But it was not always that I thought this. It took a bit in my life to realize this. But it started in a place I never thought it would be ; on a farm.
My drive to work is what started what would change my life. When I was fourteen, I was frustrated that the only time I could get money was by asking my mom which usually resulted her saying no. I had been thinking about getting a job yet I was too young for most jobs so I didn't bother to even look for one. Also, I honestly just wanted to lay around my house and play video games. Then, one spring afternoon, my mom brung home an application for a summer job for youth. Instantly I rejected the application because I saw it had to do with farming. Weeks later, I realized again that I hated not having a source of money other than asking my mom who had always said no when I asked. So I reconsidered the applicatio...
Throughout the years, I have had to deal with many trials, and challenges. Growing up BI-racial had a big affect on both my parents’ relationship, my relationship with my parents (which later on lead to their separation). There were cultural clashes within my household; my mother who was from Korea, and my father who was from Panama. I had learned to depend on myself, my friends, and most importantly, on God.
At the start of the semester, my oblivious state of nature associating with the Chinese culture reached an unacceptable level. Implementing a necessary change, I decided to educate myself on different cultures starting with China. I failed to ponder that such a rich, deep culture existed outside America. Encompassed by this country’s unique yet suffocating melting pot culture, my outlook believed ideas such as uniformity between American Chinese food and Authentic Chinese food. After this course, my bigot perspective widened as I witnessed diversity in the world. Before this class, when I thought of Chinese food, my connotation jumped to thoughts associated with chop suey, but as I progressed my education, my mindset gradually pondered foods like steamed buns or “New Year Cakes” with authentic Chinese food.
A very common concern that faces many high school students today in the world is whether they go to college or not. There are many factors in whether a student is eligible to attend a college or not. They have to have enough money to cover the cost, prepare early, and choosing what they want to attend college for. These are some of the many issues that might occur when a student starts to think or plan on going to a college.
Entering college, I heard a quote that said: “what you do in your twenty’s will determine the rest of your life.” After hearing it, I had to ensure that my entire college experience will be very beneficial for my future. When deciding on a major, I looked back in my life to see what skills I was proficient in and also discuss with adults on how they feel about the career they were positioned in at the time. After receiving the great feedback from people who are long in their career and reflecting on my life to figure out my passion, I decided to pursue the major in Mechanical Engineering Technology. I came to this conclusion by knowing I am very well with my hands, I love math, and I am always intrigued with new technology. My father also
Probably the most important turning point in my life happened in 1992. At this time, I was eight years old and living in Williamsport Pennsylvania. My dad had a well-paying job at Anchor Darling Valve Company, I was attending a parochial school and I thought life was just great. At the time we lived in a large four-story house with a separate three-story garage and an acre of forest for a backyard. I had a ten-speed bicycle and I would often go bicycling with my friends at the nearby cemetery. No-one ever objected to this, in fact people would often have picnics at the top of this hill at the cemetery. I guess the only things I ever complained about were the constant music lessons and practice sessions my parents subjected me to.
College Admissions Essay If someone asked me where I am going to be in ten years, this would be my answer. I have a great, high-paying job, and beautiful wife and family, and a nice sports car parked in front of my lovely house. When I look into the future, I see myself being successful and happy. Even though I always pictured myself this way, I never worried too much about how I would get there.
As the former president of Harvard University, Derek Bok wrote “The most obvious purpose of college education is to help students acquire information and knowledge by acquainting them with facts, theories, generalizations, principles, and the like. This purpose scarcely requires justification.” America needs educated citizens to help maintain the level of intelligence we have in society. Students need to be taught to their specific career and the knowledge needed in that career. Though education students are strengthened for their futures as good citizens. College is a more specialized form of the education they have received throughout their entire schooling and will need for their careers. College prepares students for the future by specializing
Starting college is an intense and confusing event that plagues all recent high school graduates. It is like trying to run when all you can do is crawl, and for many freshmen, myself included, one can get easily overwhelmed by the daunting task of picking a major when less than two months ago some of our parents still packed our lunches for us every morning. The concept of entering college tends to be frequently skewed and expecting an eighteen year old to decide what they want to do for the rest of their lives, without having them actually experiment in different areas, has the potential to create a generation of adults who are aggravated and depressed in their careers.
One of the challenges post-secondary institutions are facing today is their declining in student retention rates. This may be attributed to the fact that high school students are graduating without being college ready. College readiness is defined as a combination of skills, knowledge and habits of mind necessary to fully participate in college-level courses. To make this happened, across the nation and the state various efforts and initiatives have been taking place to form college readiness programs or curricula geared to help students to obtain the skills, support and resources necessary to be successful in college.
I have always been someone that is afraid to fail. From such an early age as I can remember I didn’t like to be the loser in games or get questions wrong on my school work. To me failure meant that you weren’t good enough. My parents never really taught me otherwise. I don’t think my parents really felt that they had to go over failure with me even through college. I encountered many coaches throughout my soccer career and I was always the outstanding player on the team. I was used to winning, winning in games and in the classrooms.
All of my life I have lived in a very small town of under 700 people. My school holds students from pre-school to twelfth grade all in the same building. My graduating class is thirty- eight students with most of us being in the same classes since pre-school. I love my small hometown, but I’m ready for some place bigger than 700 people. The University of Wisconsin La Crosse gives me this opportunity by getting to meet new people around campus. It’s also exciting to me that in every class there are new people, and I’m ready for a challenge of going to a larger school with thousands of students not just hundreds.
Since starting high school, I knew my passion was to become an engineer, but I wanted myself to have additional options to choose rather than merely walk a linear line I wanted to test my abilities and see precisely how much I can handle. Therefore, I started filling up my high school schedule with AP and pre-AP classes, not because I wanted to show them off for future universities that I plan to go to like my classmates but just for the sole purpose of seeing how much I can handle and keep on going. Although my grades started falling below par I did not give up and started looking wherefore I could do next, and my perception fell on taking dual credit classes during my summer break and get a head start on my academic career. Subsequently to that summer, I applied for an early college high school program for my concluding two years of high school and got in.
It seems in the society we live in today, having a college degree is a necessity. Years ago it was the norm for people to just go right into a full time job after high school, if they even finished high school; they did this to support their families. In today’s society a person has a difficult time getting a decent job without a college degree. During an adults working life, bachelor degree graduates will earn about $2.1 million and a high school graduate can expect to earn an average of $1.2 million (Day and Newburger, 2002). This is quite a difference and it puts a college education in perspective. With college come the skills needed to be successful.
From a young age my parents goal for us kids were to teach us a good work ethic. From a very young age I was taught how to work hard, and how to try my best in everything I do. I started working for my Dad when I was five years old. Obviously, I didn’t work strenuous hours, but I worked enough to understand what I would be doing in the years to come. My father, and my uncle Doug have taught me many valuable life skills. My Family, and working at a young age has formed me into the person I am today, and will continue to be a huge driving forces in my life.
"How do you feel about moving schools?" I stared into my bowl of cereal. "For high school, we would have to move to Albuquerque with your dad, do you think we should do it?" I didn't know what to say. I am the oldest child of three kids, therefore I make the decisions. I told my mom I would think about it and seriously consider the option. I could move to a new state and go to a new school and try and go to a better college than I ever could if I stayed in my small, sheltered, Arizona town and went to the one public high school that was available to me.
