Devastation was a feeling many Americans became accustomed to during the outbreak of the Civil war, but this devastation eventually evolved to be the rebirth of the United States. The numbers of casualties were tremendous, and families were torn from it, just as the nation was. There were social, economic, and political complexities that made the war seem even more impossible to resolve. Many filmmakers have tried to realistically capture these complexities in order to reveal the damaging war that preserved the United States. The accuracies can be analyzed in any film with comparisons to the film’s events, and actual events that occurred in the Civil war. One film that achieves this is Cold Mountain, which was released in 2003. It was produced by Iain Smith, and directed by Anthony Minghella, with stars in leading roles such as, Jude Law, Nicole Kidman and Renee Zellweger. The film Cold Mountain does an acceptable job of portraying the Civil war through the role of the home guard, the roles of women, and the apparel, with few errors.
Cold Mountain is a beautiful love story that takes place during the Civil War in the year of 1864, and flashes back to 1861. W. P. Inman, the leading male role in the film, is shown at the beginning of the film in 1864 in the midst of Civil War. He is fighting on the confederate side, and experiences the pain and anguish that comes with war. He is trying desperately to go home to his new love, Ada, and treasures all the letters he receives from her. He decides to desert the war, and takes a deadly risk to be with her once again. ... with very few errors. Cold Mountain has a heart wrenching ending, and has a viewer at the edge of their seat through almost the entire film. The Civil War was a devastating time in American history, and after hundreds of thousands of deaths a new country was reborn.

There are three parts in West’s book; the first part focuses on the sociological, ecological and economic relationships of the plains Indians, starting with the first establish culture of North America, the Clovis peoples. Going into extensive detail pertaining to early geology and ecology, West gives us a glimpse into what life on the early plains must have looked to early peoples. Located just north of Michigan lies a unique little island that may be small in size but large in history. Glaciers once covered this land and after they began to recede a unique landscape was revealed as was the opening for its place in history. The Mackinac Island’s history has been due in large part to its geographical location and terrain makeup.
The Battle of Cold Harbor in spring of 1864 was one of General Ulysses S. Grant’s worst offensive defeats during the Civil War. Grant failed to describe his mission command to his subordinate, direct his units to correct movement, understand his operational environment, and lead his army with a coordinated plan. Grant had a stronger, bigger, and better-equipped army than his enemy, but his failure in the mission command process led to fatal mistakes before and during the battle. Due to failed leadership, the Union preparation for this war was so poor that it suffered nearly 7,000 casualties in under an hour, making it one of the most brutal confrontations of the Civil War.
The Plains region extends from south Canada into modern-day Mexico and from the Mississippi River to the Rocky Mountains. The relatively large area hosts many Native American tribes, which includes the Comanche, Kiowa, and Pawnee just to name a few. One of the biggest events and aspects of Plains region culture is what is known as the Powwow. This event is what makes this region unique and will be the main focus of this part of the essay.

The Last of the Mohicans, released in 1993, is a story with much historical background as well as a very entertaining love story to catch the viewer’s eye. This movie is based on the historical event of the French and Indian War that went from 1754-1763. To give this story a more interesting twist, the director, Michael Mann, has added a love story between Hawkeye and Cora. Cora and her sister Alice are being escorted to their father, commander of Fort William Henry, when an attack by the Indians occurs. Daniel Day-Lewis, Hawkeye, comes to their rescue and helps bring them to their father. Hawkeye, along with his father (Chingachgook), and his brother (Uncas), try to help out her father but he will not take it into consideration. They are attacked and destroyed. All along this journey, Hawkeye and Cora fall in love. There have been a variety of responses to this film. Some critics very much enjoyed Mann’s work, while others had nothing good at all to say about it.

“The rush of battle is often a potent and lethal addiction, for war is a drug.” This quote is the first thing that flashes across the screen as viewers begin their journey into The Hurt Locker, a critically acclaimed war movie written by Mark Boal and directed by Kathryn Bigelow (Hurt). The quote was written by former New York Times war correspondent, Chris Hedges and it perfectly sets the stage for a story that depicts just how potent and addicting war can be (Corliss). The 2008 movie won six Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, Best Director, and Best Actor in a Leading Role (“Nominees & Winners”). The Hurt Locker is an exceptional movie that contains everything one would expect from an award-winning film: an intriguing plot, heart-wrenching tragedy, breathtaking visuals, top-notch acting, believability, and even a bit of controversy.
In Truman Capote’s non-fiction novel In Cold Blood, the Clutter family’s murderers, Perry Smith and Dick Hickock, are exposed like never before. The novel allows the reader to experience an intimate understanding of the murderer’s pasts, thoughts, and feelings. It goes into great detail of Smith and Hickock’s pasts which helps to explain the path of life they were walking leading up to the murder’s, as well as the thought’s that were running through their minds after the killings.
Cold Mountain is a popular book and movie written by Charles Frazier. Cold Mountain is a book about two lovers, Inman and Ada, during the Civil War, who depart on separate journeys in hopes of reuniting with one another. The novel is viewed as the physical journey of Inman from the Civil War to Cold Mountain and the inner journey of Ada, but people neglect the sheer importance that Inman’s spiritual journey has on the book. Inman’s physical journey is really non-connected episodes that are linked together by the thread that is Inman’s spiritual sense. Inman regains his spiritual sense, gradually, through the entire novel ending where he achieves redemption and self-completeness with his death. Inman’s journey is that of a spiritual sense where he crosses the void from the world of war to the world of spiritual belief which he left behind at Cold Mountain.

In Kawabata’s Snow Country, a story about a self-proclaimed ballet expert, Shimamura, who is traveling towards hot springs part of the country en route to spend time with geisha’s, even though he is a married man. He meets a geisha named Komako, who falls in love with him, and he can seemingly accomplish little when attempting to change her mind about how much she loves him, even though he does not feel the same way. In the midst of his time in Hot Springs, he meets a woman named Yoko who was traveling with a man named Yukio, and Yoko was taking care of him, until Yukio dies and she gets a job as a geisha.
