Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is used by most counselors to change clients though process hoping that it changes the outcome of their situations and problems. CBT is used amongst most agencies.
“Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) can be used to treat people with a wide range of mental health problems. CBT is based on the idea that how we think (cognition), how we feel (emotion) and how we act (behavior) all interact together. Specifically, our thoughts determine our feelings and our behavior. Therefore, negative and unrealistic thoughts can cause us distress and result in problems. “It states that all people strive towards growth and balance. Gestalt therapy is like person-centered therapy in a way, as well as in its emphasis on the therapist’s use of empathy, understanding, and unconditional acceptance of the client to enhance therapeutic outcomes. According to gestalt therapy, context affects experience, and a person cannot be fully understood without understanding his or her context (GoodTherapy.org.2017)”.
Gestalt psychotherapy recognizes that no one can be purely objective including therapists whose experiences and perspectives are also influenced by their own contexts and counselors accept the validity and truth of their client’s experiences. Gestalt therapy also recognizes that forcing a person to change can result in further distress and irritation, rather than changing results from acceptance of what is. Your feelings, thoughts and beliefs are based on you as a person to help better your everyday life and fix problems. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy states that reactions to events and the things we tell ourselves about the events are within our control, that affects our quality of life. And this is a wonderful thing because it states that we are in control of our lives and its outcomes. Especially for the type of clients I have been working with, that have had problems with substance abuse. Helping them understand that they are in control of their outcomes by changing their thought process have worked exceptionally well for some. With the clients I’ve been working with it’s hard for them to change when it’s not affecting them in some negative way, shape or form. But for some they find their life being unmanageable in because of drugs and or alcohol. When drugs start to affect their livelihood, or thing they truly care about, that’s when the little push that’s needed to help them understand why change is needed. Although this isn’t extensive document of my theoretical orientation, it is meant to provide a sense of how I work with clients. I have somewhat of an eclectic
