As a new social worker entering into this profession, I would uphold and practice the NASW Code of Ethics in a public and private sector. Utilizing the code of ethics allows me to provide services for clients that will allow him/her to reach their full capabilities. I believe that everyone in society deserves to have their basic needs met without being ashamed or judged by their lifestyle. It is important as a social worker to develop trustworthy healthy relationships among colleagues and clients to be effective and efficient in providing services. Poverty does not discriminate, but has an extreme effect on young single African American women. Studies and research as shown that teens that become mothers are likely to live below poverty. Bringing awareness to sex education for teens (males & females). More social workers are needed to work in public school high schools, because of the increase in sexual activity among teens. As a social worker, I would be able to assist the teens with resources and counseling from a non-bias perspective. As a young teen who became pregnant and had an abortion, I found out that there was not a social worker or resources available to assist me through this rough time. I would start forums on sex education, birth control, becoming a teen mom or dad, and its ramifications. Due to financial reasons, I had to take on a second job and wondered if this would affect my classes. I missed only one assignment that lowered my grade, but it taught me a lesson in prioritizing and time management skills. During my internship, I continued to work two jobs and attend classes and maintain high grades on assignments. There were times that giving up seemed easier than to continuing with the program, but my determination and will to graduate outweighed those tiring times. If I am accepted into the MSW program, I am better financially prepared to maintain my home responsibilities with one job. I would attend the program part-time, so that I will not become overwhelmed by the demands of the program.
