According to the Code of Ethics manual, “Social workers should obtain education about and seek to understand the nature of social diversity and oppression with respect to race, ethnicity, national origin, color, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, age, marital status, political belief, religion, immigration status, and mental or physical disability. Social workers are sensitive to cultural and ethnic diversity and strive to end discrimination, oppression, poverty, and other forms of social injustice. These activities may be in the form of direct practice, community organizing, supervision, consultation administration, advocacy, social and political action, policy development and implementation, education, and research and evaluation. Social workers seek to enhance the capacity of people to address their own needs. Social workers also seek to promote the responsiveness of organizations, communities, and other social institutions to individuals’ needs and social problems. The mission of the social work profession is rooted in a set of core values. These core values, embraced by social workers throughout the profession’s history, are the foundation of social work’s unique purpose and perspective: service; social justice; dignity and worth of the person; importance of human relationships; integrity, and competence.”
Culture competence refers to the process by which individuals and systems respond respectfully and effectively to people of all cultures, languages, classes, races, ethnic backgrounds, religions, and other diversity factors in a manner that recognizes, affirms, and values the worth of individuals, families, and communities and protects and preserves the dignity of each. Is prostitution a recreational activity or is it their only means of income? What safety precautions are clients taking to protect themselves from STDs and STIs? How can I communicate with my clients to enhance the building of trusting relationships to help them better their livelihood? Communication is cross cultural because each individual has their own variations which are different from all others. As a social worker, you must seek to engage others, establish communication and work toward the solution of problems they experience in their ecosystems.
