Nursing care has something to do with organizing, planning, implementing and evaluating. This simply means that nursing as a field of expertise shares a common bond with management. Management by definition is putting things into a meaning order to produce favourable results to a certain organization. Without nursing management, the whole delivery system will be on a chaos.
Nursing management need people in order to implement such management standards. These people should have good leadership skills, critical thinkers and versatile by nature. Clinical nurse managers embodies such ideals. They are actually pearls of the hospital administration as they are the direct managing body in contact with the staff nurses down to the non-nursing personnel. They serve as middle men between the top management officials and the staff nurses. Clinical nurse managers would usually focus their energy in solving the unit’s problem, perform auditing on the medical supplies being used, organize and forward medical records, perform staffing recruitment and evaluation.
Clinical nurse managers also take hands on patient care and take that information in order to collaborate with other health care professionals. They also bring the staff nurses closer to the policies and objectives of the unit as well as the hospital by role modelling. They also direct nursing activities and other administrative activities assigned to the unit. Staffing schedules are also done by them in order to promote fair distribution of manpower.

The authors in this article aimed to discover nurse manager leadership styles and their outcomes. Nurses from hospitals in the Northeastern part of the United States were asked questions. The data was collected in a locked room, alone, so no one would influence the answers of someone else. The results were put into a software program and displayed for analysis. Results showed when choosing a nurse for a managerial leadership role, one should choose someone if they have the basic components of transformational leadership, not transactional leadership. The authors show that transformational leadership had revealed positive patient outcomes, retention, and satisfaction in the nursing staff. Those nurse leaders who have qualities of transformational leadership are encouraged to build on those skills constantly.

A nurse manager plays an important role on a hospital unit. Evans defines the role of a nurse manager as one who makes sure all the needs required on a daily basis are accomplished (Evans, 2011). Evans goes on to say that one primary responsibility of a nurse manager acting in the position of a leader is to “raise the level of expectation and help employees reach their highest level of potential excellence” (Evans, 2011). With this said, it is important to identify potential barriers and problems that a nurse manager would face on a given unit and create or adopt evidence-based interventions to eliminate these problems. First, Allen and Dennis states leadership and accountability go hand in hand. This study shows that nurses are incompetent because they lack sufficient leadership skills. They do not have the ability and skills to manage with compassion and/or competence. Also, they do not empower their team to be sufficient. So why were they hired in the first place if they lacked the necessary skills to perform their jobs? Sometimes, organizations fill the opening because they are desperate to get help. But this causes hospitals to fail. When managers are ineffective, there is overall failure. Managers and nurses alike lose sight of their purpose because they are overworked and lack guidance from senior management. They are told to work harder and smarter but do not have the necessary tools to perform their jobs successfully.
