Wind power is a clean, renewable, non-defiling energy source that is ready to replace fossil fuels. Unlike fossil fuels, wind energy does not contribute to chemicals in the ocean, global warming, or acid rain. Wind power simply uses wind turbines to harness the movement of the wind. This movement spins a generator which creates energy. Affordable, clean, efficient, and beneficial, wind power is practically flawless. Despite the amazing benefits of this energy source, some citizens still criticize wind turbines for harming wildlife, even to the point of petitioning to remove them. In my opinion, wind power does not make an effective subtraction in the population of wildlife; wind power is exceptionally safe and its benefits greatly outweigh its disadvantages. Also, nuclear energy uses about 600 times more water, and fossil fuels about 500 times more water than wind energy does to create the same amount of energy (“Wind Energy and Birds”). Also, coal produces over 70% of the power sector’s greenhouse gas emotions, yet it only creates less than 40% of the power (“Why Wind Energy”). Being Efficient is one of wind power’s many benefits. Wind energy is also affordable, as its price has dropped significantly. In the past 20 years, wind power’s cost has decreased by 85% (“Wind Energy”) and in the 1980s wind energy was 40 cents per kWh, but it is now only 2.5-5 cents per kWh (“Why Wind Energy”). Despite its many benefits, citizens complain the wind turbines are very dangerous to wildlife, even more than fossil fuels, which is disrespecting the qualities of life. The debate over whether or not Nantucket Sound should be developed has caused a great divide in the relatively peaceful region of Cape Cod. People are joining sides and fighting for what they believe is the best course of action to take. The controversy will take months to sort out and come to an agreement, and even then it is guaranteed that not everyone will be happy. Will the Cape choose to move forward, becoming a pioneer, leading the way for healthier more efficient energy alternatives? Or will the Cape choose history and beauty, choosing to cradle the fragile economy that exists and not risk upsetting it with the massive changes that the wind farm will surely bring. A decision is expected to be made by the government by January 2006.
Instilling this new way of energy usage into off-grid communities will inevitably increase the state of living for those in cities and other well-populated areas. The change to renewable energy sources could drastically lower the pollutants currently being dispersed into the atmosphere by coal mines and other harmful power options, increasing the supply of renewable energy would allow us to replace carbon-intensive energy sources and significantly reduce U.S. global warming emissions. a 25 percent by 2025 national renewable electricity standard would lower power plant CO2 emissions 277 million metric tons annually by 2025—the equivalent of the annual output from 70 typical (600 MW) new coal plants (“Benefits of Renewable Energy Use”). I personally do not like windy days. However, wind could be helping us more than we realize. We could be using the wind to produce energy. This is what wind turbines do and now I will be researching them to determine the physics involved with them and how they work, their history, along with some statistics from the United States. Then I will go in-depth for the wind turbines of Texas, Washington, and Kansas and compare them.
These include the history of windmills and their role concerning the survival in the immense plains that range from east of the Rocky Mountains to the Mississippi River. The rise of the economic condition of those living around the wind farms along with the surge of investments from energy companies. Finally, the promising data relating to the amount of energy produced, and the consequences they will have on the environment. In the later and longer part of the article, the possible negative results or wind farms are brought up. Primarily, the points against wind farms have to do with the conservation of wildlife. This is separated into two sections, the first addresses the dangers wind turbines present to birds, the other on the dangers presented to bats.
Wind energy can play a critical role in saving our planet from the negative effects of energy powered by fossil fuels. Wind turbines work effectively at reducing carbon dioxide emissions. For instance, a single utility scale wind turbine can prevent the emission of 5,000 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere a year by displacing the power generated by fossil fuels. Also, a single 750-kilowatt turbine can produce roughly 2 million kilowatt hours of electricity annually. Turbines of this nature are the ones now being used in power plants around the world (Wind Energy Weekly). One good example is California. Their wind power plants displace 4.5 billion pounds of CO2 each year with the 3 billion kilowatt hours of energy they produce. To put it into an environmental perspective, that is as much CO2 as could be absorbed by a forest covering 1100 square miles (Wind Energy Weekly). Although wind energy has little to no impact on the environment when it comes to air pollution or greenhouse gases, there are other environmental concerns surrounding this form of energy production. Some of the concerns about wind energy include visual impacts, birds and other living resources, lightning and noise (Wind Energy Development).
Due to the development of technology around the world, the need of energy is increasing every year. But, what would be the best way to produce energy without polluting the air, or depleting fossil fuels? Renewable energy would also be the best solution for this problem. Of the available sources of renewable energy, wind power shows much promise. Wind turbines have been used through many generations, and the technology continues to develop. Wind Energy provides a feasible energy alternative to traditional fossil fuels.
Renewable resources are resources that have the ability to restock itself in some quantity (Field, 2008). Thus, the amount of the resource available to be processed, is determined by the restock rate (Field, 2008). Renewable energy is commonly categorized with renewable resources. Renewable energy such as wind is beginning to take hold in many parts of Canada such as Alberta and Ontario (Jones, 2013). However, in Ontario, wind power has been seen as more of a problem than a solution.
In everyday life, there are things that one needs to survive. And sustainability problems arise every day. One such problem is energy loss. The world is using up a lot of energy and new ideas need to be formed to help the rest of the world and the future of the generations that are to follow, to survive. With that the problem is that people use up energy and they do not use it efficiently. Therefore scientists are needed to find ways to deal with the sustainability problem that is arising. That is where wind turbines are used to generate this energy but the actual wind-turbines are very large, loud and they kill birds, thus new designs need to be found in order to help energy usage and to bring the size and structure of the wind turbines to a smaller scale to prevent injuries to nature and the species around it.

The United States currently relies heavily on coal, oil, and natural gas for its energy. While the price of natural gas per barrel continues to plummet, the United States is constantly seeking new sources of renewable energy. Renewable energy consists of any type of natural resource (solar power, ocean power, wind power, rain, snow, etc.) that naturally and automatically replenishes itself. Renewable energy is important because it is infinite and everlasting, meaning our children and our children’s children will be able to utilize these resources long after we are gone. Secondly, 15% of world electricity comes from wind. In order to have wind energy, it is important to have turbines to get the wind in order to produce electricity. Tall turbines produce more energy. The drawbacks of wind power are that it requires steady wind and its installations may interfere with TVs, cellphones, and other electrical devices. There are blades that connect to a central hub, a box behind the blades that contains the generator, and a long stem that connects to the ground. The way how it works is that the wind turns the blades, which spins a shaft that connects to a generator making electricity. After the electricity is produced it is sent through transmission lines to a substation that is sent to business and homes. For the sake of our planet, we must promote a renewable energy economy. Wind power can be a foundation of that sustainable energy future because it provides jobs in states that are building wind turbines, is a renewable energy source, and does not damage our environment. The environment will not be damaged by the pollution, the natural resources will not be used up, and there won’t be generating of hazardous wastes. Welcoming wind energy today will lay the foundation for a healthy tomorrow that will affect everyone in the United States. There are obstacles and challenges that will make it more difficult, but the environmental impact is well worth it to invest more money into wind energy.
