Clean Eating and Disease Prevention

Clean eating is more than just a diet. It is a lifestyle choice that benefits the overall health, which includes a healthy weight, a strong immune system, and a healthy body. Clean eating is consuming natural foods that are whole, unprocessed and unrefined or those that are closest to its natural form. Following this lifestyle can be overwhelming at first, since it involves a lot of dietary changes, however; the lifetime results are definitely worthwhile. Starting off gradually can help you ease into the changes and don’t beat up yourself if you fall off the wagon once in a while. All it takes is the right attitude, determination and perseverance to achieve a healthy, long life.

Clean eating
Cut down on sugar intake - Excessive consumption of sugar can increase the risk of diabetes and heart disease. The recommended allowance of sugar intake by the American Heart Association is only 6 tablespoons in women and 9 tablespoons for men; however, on average, Americans consume at least 30 tablespoons of sugar daily. This will eventually lead to numerous diseases and weight gain. Avoid sugary beverages such as fruit-flavored punches and carbonated drinks.
Avoid processed foods - Anything that has unknown ingredient or more than one ingredient on the label are processed foods. These packaged foods are loaded with high amounts of unhealthy substances such as sugar, salt, saturated fat and trans fat. Excessive consumption of processed foods can cause obesity, indigestion and chronic inflammation thus the best option when it comes to choosing food products is sticking to those that are natural and fresh.

Cruciferous vegetables in particular, are found to be effective in impeding the development of cancers such as breast, colon, liver, stomach and lung. This is because of several active compounds such as indoles, thiocyanates and isothiocyanates that helps in protecting cells from DNA damage, inactivating carcinogens and induce cell death or apoptosis. Key studies also shows its effectivity in reducing the risk of prostate cancer, lung cancer, breast cancer and colorectal cancer.

Boost energy levels
Clean eating helps in providing long lasting energy levels than those provided by sugar and other energy boosters. These can give quick blood sugar spikes that crashes down eventually, while natural energy boosters found in food allow a slow and steady release of sugar resulting in lasting energy.
