Classroom Management Reflections:
Classroom management is one of the most important skills that a teacher could have and one of the most important qualities that a classroom should have. It is needed to keep the class safe, positive atmosphere that a lot of children unfortunate don’t have at home. During my practicum at a local elementary school I followed a kindergarten teacher that had excellent classroom management skills which allowed her to be a very successful teacher. Throughout my 52 hours at the elementary school, I learned many great strategies that I can use throughout my years as a teacher. The elementary school was a low-income school with many children who have behavior problems. Every day before school started the teacher would write the entire days schedule on the white board so the children could always know what was coming next. Every day was a routine and it seemed that the children really appreciated it. Another great tool the teacher had was when children were finished with classwork instead of the students bothering the teacher with what to do next she had another plan. She had a drawer for each student that had classwork that they could do that instead. When they finished their classwork they would turn it in then go to their drawer to work on other classwork quietly.
When a child in the classroom is misbehaving, the teacher I followed had a very good way to manage a child acting out. On a wall was a chart that had each number that was exclusive to each student in the classroom. There was 7 stages on the chart: Parent Contact, Think About It, Warning, Reading to Learn, Great, Super, and Fantastic. ...estions who were always eager to answer. She would ask a variety of students who may or may not know the answer. She promoted an open classroom that allowed the student to not feel bad about themselves if they answered wrong. She would delve deeper into a question on and idea to make sure that each child knew the material. She would always go back to a concept that students struggled with and tried to relate it to a real world problem. Each child may not understand a concept but she made sure to work with each child to the best of her ability to make sure each child got the help they needed. The teacher I observed had great strategies that I will use in future. Her ability to create a classroom that was open to questions and her clear teaching habits are something that is admired and something I will strive to replicate in the future for my future classroom.
