There is an epidemic spreading across India, and that epidemic is the clash between spiritual tradition and modern medicine. Many Indians today still believe in the healing powers that the spiritual world can give them, and often the spiritual healing process doesn 't only have any affect but can sometimes cause even more harm. India has been struggling with many different components of their society for a long time now. The Indian culture is deeply rooted in spiritual and cultural tradition and the trying to convince people in a society like this can be very difficult at times. According to Kar, the reason that faith is healing is so popular in India is that it is available easily and locally, compared to proper psychiatric treatment, that requires traveling a long distance for many people (732). India has a dwindling amount of doctors who are qualified to treat those who need mental treatment, “In a country of over a billion people, there are only around 3500 psychiatrists” (Chatterjee,1161). With very few people qualified to treat those with psychological problems, one can understand why so many people turn to other forms of healing, even if it can be dangerous. The fact of the matter is that Indians are not simply just relying on faith healing for their main source of treatment its just the most convenient and affordable treatment to them. The Indians seem to be open to proper medical treatments, so it is up to the government of India to provide the proper medical services that people can have easy access to.
