In this essay i’ll be describing the sociogical forces and the problems created by same-sex marriage and the civil unions in america.
Sociological forces are task that are made to influence or cause change to and individual or a group of people two controversial social forces are civil unions and same-sex marriage. First society commonly states that marriage is a commit honor between men and women to take care of each other until death do them apart. Now we have same-sex marriages through out the united states in different states in the the 50’s and 60’s this wasn’t allowed and being gay or lesbian was consider a person with a mental illness. The Controversy today on same –sex marriage what was once frown upon is now embrace and rationalize in society. “Many of the reasons offered for opposing gay marriage are based on the assumption that gays have a choice in who they can feel attracted to, and the reality is quite different. Many people actually believe that gays could simply choose to be heterosexual if they wished. But the reality is that very few do have a choice -- any more than very few heterosexuals could choose which sex to find themselves attracted to” (Gay Marriage: The Arguments and the Motives). In united states there are 16 states that allow same-sex marriage to take place with New York and California being the two biggest of all the states that allow people of the same gender to merger. Although most of society are accepting of same-sex marriage there are still people who disagree with the law and have protest that same-sex marriage should be banned. Economically states like mississippi, south carolina, north carolina can’t afford to pass a bill like this because the state diesn’t generate enough money. I believe the outcome on civil union and same-sex marriage will prosper because of how accepting society is getting. Years ago this wouldn’t have been considered but i think america more than any country is heading in the right direction toward supporting gay couples. Jason collins a professional basketball player openly admited he’s gay and most of use respected him even more because until him there hasn’t been and open gay men playing in the nba he became the face of the gay culture.

Throughout the recent history of America, gay marriage has always been an issue. With the different views and morals everyone has on the subject, it makes it hard for individual states to determine what side they should be on. In 1983 a Harvard Law School student, Evan Wolfson, wrote a thesis stating the rule of marriage equality. Justices concluded that gay couples were entitled to the legal benefits of civil marriage; and most crucially in the Supreme Judicial Court in Massachusetts, whose favorable ruling, in a suit by lawyer Mary Bonauto and the Boston-based Gay and Lesbian Advocated and Defenders, led to the nation’s first bona fide same-sex marriages…” (“Gay Marriage turns 10 and Credit Should Be Spread around- The Boston Globe). On May 17, 2004 Massachusetts became the first state to legalize gay marriages. In June of 2013, California legalized gay marriages, which helped their large LGBT (Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered) community. (“History and Timeline of the Freedom…”). When this finally happened, it was seen as a great achievement by Karmala Harris, a California Attorney. “This is a profound day in our country, and its just the right thing: ‘Justice is finally being served’” (“Court Gives OK for California Gay Marriages”).
The constitutional right of gay marriage is a hot topic for debate in the United States. Currently, 37 states have legal gay marriage, while 13 states have banned gay marriage. The two essays, "What’s Wrong with Gay Marriage?" by Katha Pollitt and "Gay "Marriage": Societal Suicide" by Charles Colson provide a compare and contrast view of why gay marriage should be legal or not. Pollitt argues that gay marriage is a constitutional human right and that it should be legal, while Colson believes that gay marriage is sacrilegious act that should not be legal in the United States and that “it provides a backdrop for broken families and increases crime rates” (Colson, pg535). Both authors provide examples to support their thesis. Katha Pollitt provides more relevant data to support that gay marriage is a constitutional right and should be enacted as law in our entire country, she has a true libertarian mindset.
During the fight against slavery and segregation, America realized that public opinion can be wrong. The movement for women’s rights brought about the knowledge that the government has had more control over civil rights than previously believed. Both historical movements arose from a common belief: despite public opinion, the government should protect the freedoms outlined in the constitution. Current societal issues related to marriage reflect this principle; however, authors Cherlin and Bennett would disagree on the connection being made. Cherlin acknowledges that momentum in the fight for homosexual equality has been attained by the degradation of the marital structure. As family structure among heterosexual couples is more often dysfunctional and more commonly broken down, a question arises of whether or not homosexual marriages radically affect society any more than this. Cherlin makes the implication that, if no compelling state interest can be found against gay marriage legalization, keeping it illegal would be a civil inequity. Bennett would contend that with this momentum, society may be blindly crossing a line. Divorce rates and out of wedlock births have skyrocketed due to legal changes in the availability of marriage and divorce documents. What is the difference between marriage and civil unions? There are many differences, mostly consisting of the benefits that married couples get that couples in civil unions do not receive. Marriage is different for homosexual and heterosexual couples. Even when homosexuals are married they do not receive the same benefits as heterosexual married couples. What if couples in a civil union could have the same benefits as a married couple?

Money is a strain on people who can hardly afford to support their families. This usually leads to anger towards each other and that will lead to arguments after arguments. Families could also work less hours, and spend more time with each other doing social activities. Families usually blame each other for their problem. It’s easier to blame each other than to blame the world. The couple blames one another to get the blame off of themselves. The husband may work too much because they need money, so the wife will end up getting angry because they don’t spend enough time together, but all of this is social problems. Sociological Imagination is the ability to see the relationship between individual experiences and larger social influences. People blame social forces when they don’t want to blame themselves. Social imagination challenges certain values because people don’t expect to be responsible for the way things are, so ultimately we are playing into most of the social issues in the world today. So when people look at personal experiences and the social influences on them, it challenges certain standards because the reasons people go through those experiences can be stopped or changed. Some may disagree with homosexuality; however, the mindset and rules about gay marriage are changing. A May 2013 Gallup poll showed 53% of Americans in support of gay marriage (“Gay” 3). The definition of matrimony is headed towards a positive evolution and you can be part of it. This map shows where same-sex orientation is legalized or punished (See Fig. 1/World Homosexuality Laws/World). The severe hate and discrimination that LGBT members face on a daily basis must end. Help change the future by voting “yes” for the legalization of gay marriage in your state.
The world today is surrounded with many controversial issues. One such issue would be the topic of gay marriage. This country has grown around one major tradition, being the definition of marriage. It’s more-less looked at as a religious or legal commitment between a women and man, to express their love and compassion towards one another, being the last and final step there is to take with that significant other. Homosexual relationships are rapidly gaining acceptance in this country. However, the Defensive of Marriage Act, that former president Clinton signed in 1996, is holding many back from being able to marry what could be the significant other of their dreams. Homosexuality effects from 8% to 15% of all males, as well as females being slightly less than the male population. To put this in a more familiar context, there are as many gays and lesbians in America today as there are unemployed citizens. There are a few states which formed a type of commitment called a "civil union", which basically is marriage without using the word "marriage." Gay couples are denied significant rights when they are not allowed to marry, and these result in injustices within society. Most carry the burden of hiding their sexual identity for fear of being disrespected or mistreated by the general population who remain ignorant to the causes and circumstances of homosexuality. This puzzles many due to the excess amount of investigative work that has been done on the phenomenon, as well as puzzling the church as to who would want to look into the concept in such a sinful matter.
A contradictory essay titled “Societal Suicide” by the authors Anne Morse and Charles Colson conveying that marriage ought to be realized as an old – fashioned and traditional way were people come together in holy matrimony when they said “traditional building block of human society.” Their essay continues to explicate the weary and unfair assumptions of marriage by concluding that there should only be the existence of man and woman relationships. A reason why those states should pass the law is, because of the foster care system. Many children, whether it’s a boy or girl, can jump to and from at least twenty homes before they turn 18. Some would be against the gay adoption, because they feel like the child would choose their sexual orientation based off what they see their adoptive parents doing. Those people fail to realize that having gay parents wouldn’t affect the child’s sexual preference. Just like having hetrosexcual parents cannot change a child from being gay.
Fewer social issues cause more heated debate both politically and personally than the issue of same-sex marriage. When presented with the term “marriage equality”, most Americans would probably associate it with same-sex marriage. But homosexual couples have not been the only demographic to experience inequality in America when it comes to marriage. In early agrarian societies, women were the face of marriage inequality. They were considered a possession like land or cattle or anything else. Fast forward to 1960’s America when the American Civil rights movement was at its height. With the exception of those who lived it, few would remember that it was only in recent decades that interracial marriage was legalized in the United States. Will history repeat itself? Will future generations of Americans ever remember a time when same sex couples were not allowed to marry? This paper will attempt to explore the history of marriage inequality in America as well as highlight the issues that are being debated and voted on in present day elections.

This has somewhat loosened the stigma previously associated with this segment of the population. Along with evolving public attitudes, economic and legal changes in the United States have also reduced barriers previously facing same-sex couples making it more likely for them to form families (Butler, 2004). On the other hand, continued strong institutional ties to marriage between one man and one woman continue to pose problem for this group and shape social agendas (Glenn, 2004; Lind, 2004). While several states and many employers have given recognition and benefits to homosexual partners, there is still no uniform policy in place which addresses their familial rights in the United States.
Over the last years the topic of same-sex marriage has been of great importance to our society. The idea of the same gender being lawfully married is disturbing to a group of people but in the recent years the number of supporters has increased. The cases that argue for the legalization of same-sex marriage are focusing on the relationship of the individuals and do not see anything in same-sex marriage that could harm our society as a whole. The article “How the President go to ‘I Do’ on Same-Sex Marriage,” published by Joe Becker in April 2014, explains how Barack Obama started saying that he was undecided about the subject matter but is now leaning toward the legalization of same-sex marriage. The subject matter takes a lot of analyzing of what pros and cons are to come from the legalization of same-sex marriage. Same-sex marriage is a global argument that deals with unifying two individuals of the same gender under the law. The main reason that supporters give for justifying same-sex marriage is that it is for the same reason as straight people, to show love and commitment to each other. Furthermore, the argument of same-sex marriage is difficult to generalize because of the multiple factors that need to be taken in consideration when making any decision regarding this topic. Although Becker does have true premises, he lacks clarity in his terms which make his argument be false and invalid.
