Cigarettes: Why They Should Stop Being Produced and Sold

679 Words2 Pages

In today’s world, there is a deadly murderer going around. It lives in people’s pockets, purses, bags, jackets, and is held in their very own hand. This mass murderer looks harmless wrapped in simple white paper with a brown filter at the end, but inside it contains over 500 chemicals that kill you and surrounding people slowly. It’s called a cigarette. While many people are against this deadly form of tobacco, there are people who wouldn’t mind, in fact would love if the manufacturing of this product never stopped, simply because they are addicted to it or are making money off of it. I on the other hand, am against any support of this product. Cigarettes can lead to many diseases such as coronary heart disease, strokes, lung cancer, and many more. They are especially harmful if you are pregnant, which is also why I, and hopefully you after reading this, will believe they should stopped being produced and sold everywhere.

Many people smoke cigarettes because they feel as if it relieves stress. This is also known as ‘self-medication’. The perception of cigarettes easing stress and the feeling of relaxation is nothing more than a myth. In fact, smoking does anything but relieve stress, if anything, it adds more stress into your life by causing you to spend all your money on them, and always worrying about when is the next time you will be able to sneak one in during your work hours or anywhere else you are at. As mentioned in the introductory paragraph, smoking can lead to many diseases, for example, coronary heart disease. Coronary heart disease is caused when plaque builds up in the heart arteries, eventually hardening and narrowing your arteries, limiting the flow of oxygen supplied blood to your organs and other parts of you...

The smoke alone can cause over 5,000 premature deaths and of these deaths, 50% are from cancer, 40% are from the baby having heart disease or stroke, and 30% is from lung cancer. Even if the mother alone is not smoking, just being around smoke (second hand some) can cause the baby to be born with defects and even a stillbirth.

Cigarettes are proven to be deadly, not only by the statements listed in this essay but many other known reasons. Each year, an estimated amount of 450,000 people die from cigarettes, a reason why I called this mass murder. The manufacturing and selling of this product should be stopped immediately so lives can be saved from deadly diseases, such as heart disease, strokes, lung cancer and the killing and harming of unborn babies. People should take a stand and stop harming themselves and others.
