Has one ever looked at a cigarette and thought what it would do to their mind, body, and future? Tobacco has been around since the colonies were formed. However, cigarettes did not become famous until around the 1950s. While they seemed cool back then, cigarettes have been researched and tested throughout the years. Cigarettes should be illegal because menthol cigarettes damaging to the public health of the United States, are like drugs, and are a main contender to the death toll in the United States.
Menthol damaging to the public health of the United States. According to Neal L. Benowitz, MD and Jonathon M. Samet, MD in their article “The Threat of Menthol Cigarettes to U.S. Public Health”, the TPSAC states that menthol cigarettes are bad for the public cigarettes. For example, the number of smokers will increase in the United States because of the availability of menthol cigarettes (2180). Also, John Roberts states in his article “Cigarettes could be classified as drugs in US,” public documents exposed the tobacco companies’ motivation. They are increasing the amount of nicotine in cigarettes causing the manipulation of bodily functions. However, Ernest Ditcher claims in his blog entry “Why do we smoke cigarettes,” smoking a cigarette makes one calm and feel satisfied. Smoking gives people a little bit of pleasure because they can stop working for a split second to have a cigarette and feel like a child again.
Since 1994, the Food and Drugs Administration has classified cigarettes as drugs. According to John Roberts in his article “Cigarettes could be classified as drugs in US,” the FDA classified nicotine as a drug because it is addictive. David Kessler has stated that tobacco companies manipulate the nicotine in tobacco ...
