On January 2, 1971 a huge step was made to ban cigarette companies from advertising on radio and television. This law was a monumental step in limiting the ability for tobacco companies to freely advertise their dangerous products. In this modern day and age, the problem of cigarette and tobacco advertising needs to be addressed once again. Cigarette companies continue to advertise in new mediums using emotional claims, and deceptive advertising to sell a harmful product. They need to be stopped. Banning these companies from television and radio was a good start, but more needs to be done to decrease the amount of advertising and promotion that tobacco companies continue to use to sell a harmful product. This is immoral and should not be legal. The main point of the in-store advertisements is to immediately entice a consumer to buy the cigarettes. To do this the advertisement must glorify their product. The warning labels are not what is seen by the average consumer, what is seen are catchy slogans that play on human emotions. These ads are deceitful and make smoking not only sound safe, but sound enjoyable. Descriptive words like cool, smooth and fresh are just some examples. The problem is cigarette advertising does whatever they can within the law to try and convince you that you should be smoking their brand of cigarettes. Using seductive and deceptive print ads and successful in-store advertisements, they have enough allure to continue to make people try them. Luckily for cigarette companies, that is sometimes all they need. Their immoral use of ads is so effective because they just need a consumer to try their product and the addictive chemicals can keep them coming back. These companies know the consequences and suffering their products cause but choose to continue to wrongfully advertise so they can continue to make money from a dangerous product.
