Cigarette Companies in Capitalism

Tobacco is one of the largest industries contributing to the economy of US. As reported by The Tobacco Atlas, the revenue of global tobacco industry is about a half trillion US dollars annually. In 2010, the combined profit of Coca-Cola, Microsoft, and McDonaldswas 35.1 billion US dollars, equal to the combined profit of six leading tobacco companies.(Alday)Tobacco industry is now harmful than ever. Although people realize that tobacco is harmful to one's health through tobacco taxes, smoke-free public places, advertisement bans, mass media, and health warnings, many still smoke with the influence of propaganda that cigarette companies have made. These companiespromote young smokers through the use of advertisements and scientific techniques to control the amount of carcinogen and nicotine.
The advertisements that cigarette companieshave made romanticized and allowed the public to have positive view towards smoking.Furthermore, the companies have ensured the public with advertisements including doctors claiming that cigarettes do not cause harm to health.

Tobacco companies advertise connecting social values that the public wants and smoking. Despite the fact that connections may not be true, many people tend to believein those falseadvertisements. Philip Morris is famous for creating the image of Marboloman: a ruggedcowboy smoking a cigarette in nature. This image of Marlboro man convinced males to think that they will look masculine if they smoke tobacco. The romanticized fantasies that tobacco companies created were enough to give vicarious satisfaction to men in city who sought a moment in nature.
