Cultural Values in Chronicle of a Death Foretold Throughout the world, there are many different cultures, most of which have evolved over time. One of an author’s jobs is to capture the culture of the novel’s setting, and allow the readers to experience it. Gabriel Garcia Marquez does an excellent job of recreating Colombia’s culture in his novel Chronicle of a Death Foretold by using each of his characters to portray one aspect of the culture. This novel, although not explicitly stated, most likely takes place in Colombia, after the Thousand Days civil war for independence. After this war, many Arabs immigrated to Colombia, including Santiago’s father. Since Chronicle of a Death Foretold takes place in a small town, its inhabitants are extremely conservative. They adhere to strict gender roles, they prefer Colombians to immigrants, and they take family and personal honor very seriously. Gender roles are greatly emphasized in this novel. While men are expected to work and establish their own identity, women were expected to be docile, innocent, and delicate. Their only roles were to get married and raise families. He shows how a society’s cultural beliefs can lead to a murder that people think is alright, all because a woman lost her virginity before marriage. What’s even more astounding is that the Vicario brothers committed murder even though they didn’t want to and they didn’t have sufficient proof. By using Maria Alejandrina Cervantes to show the importance of gender roles and honor in society, Marquez effectively shows how an independent woman can defy cultural and social expectations, while still being a decent human being. Carlos Fuentes author of The Death of Artemio Cruz has used his novel to show how Mexico has been transformed and molded into its present state through the use of his character Artemio Cruz. Fuentes uses Cruz to bring together a historical truth about the greedy capital seekers, robber barons, if you will, who after the revolution brought Mexico directly back to into the situation it was in before and during the Revolution. Fuentes wrote the novel in nineteen sixty-two, shortly after the Cuban Revolution. Fuentes is able to express his disappointment from the Mexican Revolution, the revolution by the people in his native land. The revolution seemed to change nothing for the average person in Mexico; the change that took place was merely a shift in power. The power transferred to the money makers, crooked politicians and the business men who ultimately practiced on the same ideas that the revolution tried to end.

According to “Boys and Girls”, there are certain things women should not be doing as defined by their genders. The narrator, a young girl, feels more inclined to spend her time outside alongside her father, “I worked willingly under his eyes, and with a feeling of pride.” She finds her place in a man’s world, outdoors in her father’s domain. While she is a female, she does not relate herself to the things of feminine nature. When her mother goes to speak with her father in the barn the narrator “felt my mother had no business down here,” admitting that it was a man’s world, and also her place, but not her mother’s. Her mother could not stand the idea of her daughter doing a man’s work, reminding her husband, “Wait till Laird gets a little bigger, then you’ll have real help and then I can use her more in the house. It’s not like I had a girl in the family at all.” According to her mother’s definition of girls, a daughter, who spends all her time outside doing a son’s work, is not a daughter at all.

A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings by Gabriel Garcia Marquez is a complex story about the author’s experience of poverty and hardship during the civil war in Colombia. Throughout Marquez’s late teen years, Colombia was plagued by social and economic problems. In 1946, Colombia’s problems grew into a violent rebellion that lasted for ten long years. “The violent war was named La Violencia or The Violence; it became the most bloodshed period in Colombia” (Bailey 4). Marquez’s choice of magic realism made it possible for him to place hidden messages in the story by creating a deeper connection to his readers. The intricate characters and scenes Marquez portrays in the story all have a significant relation on his emotions, his life, and his country during the tragic years of La Violencia.
Used to convey characteristics of Colombian culture characters in the Chronicle of a Death Foretold are interviewed by the narrator. This format contributes to the investigative tone of the book. Marquez used character to portray his feeling about some aspects of the Colombian culture aiding one to discover a new culture while reading.
Women in Latin America were expected to adhere to extreme cultural and social traditions and there were few women who managed to escape the burden of upholding these ridiculous duties, as clearly shown in “Chronicle of a Death Foretold”. First, Latin American women were expected to uphold their honor, as well as their family's honor, through maintaining virtue and purity; secondly, women were expected to be submissive to their parents and especially their husbands; and lastly, women were expected to remain excellent homemakers.

It is a journalistic account of an historic murder in a small town in Columbia, a detective story, and a work of allegorical fiction all rolled into one. The plot revolves around the vicious murder of Santiago Nasar, justified as an honor killing, and the community’s role in this event. Despite defining themselves as devout Catholics, killing to preserve honor and lying to avoid culpability implies a superficial religious devotion where corrupt traditions trump all. Gender roles, reflecting religious beliefs and cultural expectations also impact individual decisions and reactions as the characters grapple with the unfolding events.

In the story Chronicle of a Death Foretold, Gabriel Garcia Marquez portrays how the bystander effect impacts the people around Santiago Nasar to act submissively revealing how people do not want to help others in difficult situations, unless it directly affects them. Marquez informs readers how individuals only see the different ways for personal gain, thereby not having “time” to help others in need. As Santiago Nasar nears his death, many of those who are informed of it do nothing to save his life, as they all rely on others to help rather than taking matters into their own hands and stepping up. Ignorance by specific townspeople, like Angela Vicario, Lazaro Aponte, Clotilde Armenta, and even a friend, Cristo Bedoya. Each person’s ignorance caused them to fail in helping a fellow citizen to their small town while some did not take enough initiative in preventing the murder.
