1. The body of chronically ill person is a nexus of living meanings made manifest by the patients articulations of pain and health, of sufferings and joy.
The focus of public health has been shifted according to events and particularly a community making it hard to define. However this makes it crucial to determine the situation under the recent public health, such as health needs assessment, in order for action to be taken with the economic situation, epidemiological transitions related with stigma, demographic status, health literacy and life course approach, and facilitating day-to-day activities (Wilson and Mabhala, 2013).
WHO defines health as a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity’ (Who.int, 2014). Critics of biomedical model emphasized that this model is less effective when treating patients with long-term illness such as depression and diabetes. They recommended biopsychosocial model for treating complex illness. This model takes into account the whole person which has led to extensive research in many aspects of wellness. It addresses more than just the physical well-being as many people are now ill but they have no presence of disease. Socioeconomic status, race, ethnicity and generational differences all play important roles in the model of wellness (Brannon and feist 2010). It is evidence that taking medicine is not just enough for someone suffering from a long-term to get better. For instance, a patient with cancer may be given chemotherapy by a biomedical Doctor. While a biopsychosocial Doctor may give cancer patient chemotherapy and observe how the patient and family response to the disease. He may also treat the patient’s depression and anxiety of being ill.
Chronic illness or chronic condition is a long lasting or persistent disease or condition in a person’s health. A chronic illness can affect anyone’s life at any time. A person’s life can be affected greatly in many ways by a chronic illness. A person may be affected physically, their independence may be taken away, they may feel tired and/or in pain due to a chronic illness they may be suffering from. Financial problems may occur due to the high medical costs treating the chronic illness, someone could lose their, job, their appearance may be affected, and a person may experience confusion. If a chronic illness unexpectedly approaches someone’s life, a person may feel overwhelmingly confused. This confusion may come, because they don’t understand why they now have this illness. This confusion is primarily seen in children. Since chronic illness affects lives so greatly, a person may start to feel anger, stress, or anxiety because of the interruption of the chronic illness in a person’s life.
Quality of life can vary from person to person and different factors can impact the quality of health such as an illness. A medical condition may impact a person and/or their family’s life moderately or severely. Thus, in some situations may involve case management to help organize the support and services that is necessary for the patient and/or their family. In the case of Henry, he was diagnosed with hepatitis C and cirrhosis in which it impacted various aspects of his and his family’s life. Hepatitis C is an infection that can be transmitted through blood and cirrhosis is the final stage of hepatitis C in which the liver is not functional. As a result, there are limited options for Henry because of the severity of his illness; thus, a case manager may be needed to help identify the comprehensive needs and organize the resources for Henry and his family, so they can receive the appropriate care. Due to the seriousness of a medical condition, the patient and their family will have a complex collection of needs that must to be
The concept of health and illness being separated into two models provides indication into the two very different but integral paradigms of how to treat patients deemed as needing care. These two models (known as the Biomedical Model and the Psychosocial Environmental Model) classify diagnosis, treatment and care in different ways which some actually share the same purpose. It is important in today’s society to be open to both models as both are used in all practices based on their similarities and their differences as they are able to “provide complimentary explanations rather than competing ones.”(Gilbert, L, Selikow, T & Walker, L., 2009:3).
The term health is greatly influenced by factors both positively and negatively (Tones & Green 2004). An example portraying this statement, a persons’ income. A person who earns a high salary is a result of high educational achievement and a well paid job such as a Professor. They will have the advantage of experiencing both for themselves plus their family, better access to healthcare (Bupa) and live healthier lives Whereas for a person who earns a low salary and is working as a cleaner, both them and their family may be prone to chronic illnesses. This is due to lack of accessibility to healthcare and lower social being. This essay will be exploring factors that have impacted on a person’s socio-economic class, his/her social situation and
Looking after one’s health is very important as it helps us to stay away from diseases and live a happy life, which is why I personally worship my health. Therefore, I find it rather interesting to study about the diseases and it’s adverse effects on one’s health. In future, after completing my University, I have a strong desire to help the poor and illiterate people who don’t have access to the healthcare facilities.
Mental health illness is often created and diagnosed from the subjective judgment of mental health professionals. Often times, diagnosis consists of undesirable traits perceived by the dominant society as a problem. Society creates beliefs and dictates social norms in order to instilling social order. Moreover, marginalized groups that are often disenfranchised are often diagnosed and labeled with mental illnesses, because of the inability to become resilient and successful from impoverished conditions. Delgado and Stefancic (2001) describe Intersectionality as multiple identities that oppress individuals that feature undesirable traits depicted in society. As a result, many people of color, features of disability and women may be diagnosed with mental health disorders due to multiple stressors in society. Hence, marginalized groups that are perceived as less desirable are likely to be diagnosed with mental health illnesses, because of their status and position in society. The mental health stigma is a form of social control, as mental health diagnosis is labeled from the dominant society’s beliefs and ideas. Furthermore, mental health diagnosis causes stigmas, and produces the inability for people to become resilient from the labels that have been created by the dominant society. Herein, many of these mental health traits are socially constructed in order to instill social control to disenfranchised groups. As a result, the placement of people in asylums and mental health diagnosis are attributed to socio-economic perspective due to social control.

... the dichotomy disease / Illness established to differentiate between pathology and suffering of the individual. While disease is an organic condition that can be discovered through various laboratory procedures, illness is much more subjectively, describing the status of the individual suffering and how the suffering is influencing his daily experience of life ( EJ Sobo , 2004:3 ) .The concept of illness includes both individual reactions to the state of being ill, and beliefs and attitudes that he has on the disease of suffering ( M. Winkelman 2009:60 ) . At least in theory, disease is universal, pathological damage of the body can be labelled and classified. Illness, however, is a variable factor, influenced by human personality traits, family background and social context, as well as, by the cultural context which acts as a modelling vector of human suffering.
