In a time where wars ravaged lands and slavery abounded, the need of missionaries grew. However, these missionaries had to exceed all expectation and become reformers as well. In the midst of vast knowledge being discovered someone needed to have a positive influence that did not point toward success or desire to be remembered. As travel grew easier through the railroad and steam engines reformers began to have the ability to go farther than ever before. They took the forms of doctors, missionaries, inventors, and so much more. Each one played their part in a bigger story that now after 2 centuries we are finally able to stand back and look at with new appreciation and knowledge.
The 1800’s were swimming with knowledge. They brought to pass some of vital beliefs that are still around today. It started the ball rolling in several different directions. Most of the world had been discovered by this point. However, mysteries still remained to be uncovered. Charles Darwin emerged with his theories of evolution which changed the entire culture’s outlook on life. Thomas Edison, Alexander Graham Bell, Marie Curie along several others also made their mark in the scientific world. Then Napoleon and Abraham Lincoln, strong leaders for good and evil, changed the course of their countries. People were greatly entertained by Buffalo Bill, Annie Oakley, and the Wild West show. It changed people’s outlook on what the west was and how it came to be. The oil business came to life underneath John D. Rockefeller’s special care. James Bowie made an appearance and left us with the bowie knife. Kit Carson traveled coast to coast unveiling America’s beautiful secrets. ...time. There were so many great men and women in the 1800s it can be easy to forget the missionaries. However, he was not only a missionary. He was a doctor, an explorer, and a faithful father. He never let obstacles get in the way of him succeeding or of his missions work. He conquered doubt and fear and choose to extraordinary.

People of all groups, social status, and gender realized that they all had voice and they can speak out through their emotional feels of religion. Johnathan Edwards was the first one to initiate this new level of religion tolerance and he states that, “Our people do not so much need to have their heads filled than, as much as have their hearts touched.” Johnathan Edwards first preach led to more individuals to come together and listen. Than after that individual got a sense that you do not need to be a preacher to preach nor you do not need to preach in a church, you can preach wherever you want to. For the first time, you have different people coming together to preach the gospel. You had African American preaching on the roads, Indian preachers preaching and you had women who began to preach. The Great Awakening challenged individuals to find what church meets their needs spiritually and it also let them know about optional choices instead of one. Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live in the early 1900s? The turn of the century left Americans feeling more optimistic about life (Woog 4). People were honest and kind (Woog 5). The 1900s can be remembered as a happy time, but also a time of hardship for some Americans (Woog 5). Theodore Roosevelt, President 1901-1910, guided America in a way in which he created laws to help the social and economic problems of the time as well as improving politics by being a strong leader and recognizing the true needs of the country.
This time period also saw many new inventions that would change American society forever. Such things as the telephone, radio, and television are things that the average present day American could not imagine living without. But a hundred years ago people were amazed at such things. Railroads were now able to bring people all over the country while steam ships could bring you all around the world and airplanes could let you fly. The horseless carriage turned into the automobile.
Through out the 1920’s many inventions were created that altered human civilization. Transportation was successfully mastered. Radio communication was becoming more common and medicine was saving more and more lives every day.
During the 1800’s, America was going through a time of invention and discovery known as the Industrial Revolution. America was in its first century of being an independent nation and was beginning to make the transition from a “home producing” nation to a technological one. The biggest contribution to this major technological advancement was the establishment of the Transcontinental Railroad because it provided a faster way to transport goods, which ultimately boosted the economy and catapulted America to the Super Power it is today.
Around the year 1800, there are some significant political, economic, and social changes. These changes affected Americans significantly. Americans in nineteenth century described that freedom is the most important character of their country. Freedom was connected with economic and democracy but it is also influenced by the slavary system.

The radio revolutionised the way families spent time together and receive information. The movie theaters had an impact on how people forgot about the depression and made life seem better. Many homes in the 1920s also just got access to electricity while many homes were still lit by candle light, but became more prominent as the time period continued. Labor saving appliances of the 1920s made the household chores easy to accomplish than it used to be. The 1920s was enriched by many technological achievements that helped changed the way americans communicated, managed their health, and partook in leisurely activities.
During the late 1700’s and well into the 1800’s, American’s lived through expansive growth including economic transformation, politics, labor classification, and increased population were a result of overall growth of the United States. This growth affected how the Americans lived, worked, voted, and were viewed by their fellow citizens. Americans were transforming the lives for financial gains, their own rights, and overall a more content life.
The citizens and leaders of the reform movements realized that without action, these movements would be nothing (DOC G). So many of them decided to step out and stand up for their cause. Without these important American leaders, our nation would not have grown into the nation it is today. Through their determination and sacrifice, they made a huge difference in expanding America’s democratic ideals by laying the foundation for religion and education, movements through abolition and temperance acts, expanding beliefs by caring for the insane, and taking a stand for personal rights.
After World War I, America was going through an uplifting time of good fortune and prosperity. This period of freedom, known as The Roaring Twenties was a time for fun and disobeying rules. The 1920s brought new and exciting things to American culture. Music, entertainment, pop culture, and fads were greatly impacted during this time in history. The effects of each of these areas still influences America today.
Athletes were looked up to as heroes, authors helped people escape into a different life, and women dressed as flappers and started voting. The Harlem Renaissance, the model T, prohibition, sports heroes, the role of women, and new technologies all helped influence the social changes in the "Roaring Twenties". Henry Ford and Charles Lindbergh were admired for their talents. Henry ford introduced an afforidable automibile, and Charles Lindberg flew non-stop from New York to Paris in the flight of St. Louis. These two men were held on a petistil durning this era and are still admired til this day.
John Wesley is one of the most influential men in Christian history, a man known for his rigorous devotion to personal holiness. He not only is the founder of the Methodist Church, but also influenced the Wesleyan Church, the Free Methodist Church and the Nazarene Church, among others. His passion for the nonbelievers led him to travel 250,000 miles, give away over £30,000 and preach over 40,000 times around the globe. Wesley lived his life with vigor, rising each morning at four to prepare for the day. John Wesley pioneered spiritual revitalization in Europe and North America, devoted himself to personal holiness, and redefined experience and the Holy Spirit in his lifetime, changing the course of Christian history.
Now a lot of these inventions have helped shaped America. Such as the train and car, which have changed transportation and trade for good. Then there are the electrical inventions, such as the light bulb and the alkaline storage battery. Changing the way people live at home. Its almost impossible to live with out those two inventions, especially since love their television and computers.
A missionary can be defined as someone who is sent to spread Christianity throughout the world or do other religious works. There have been several influential missionaries in modern day America such as William Carey, George Müller, David Livingstone, Lottie Moon, and Amy Carmichael. These people have dedicated their lives to reaching out to others and have inspired many people to become missionaries. Each one of them has impacted the world in a different way.
