History Early Life: Christian Dior two words that define couture, fashion but most important of all it defines luxury ready to wear. Dior was born on January 21, 1905 in Granville, a town on the coastline of Normandy, France. He was the second of five children born to Alexandre Louis Maurice Dior and Isabelle Cardamone, the other children were Raymond, Jacqueline, Bernard and Ginette. Dior came from a very wealthy family, his father owned a highly successful fertilizer manufacturer called Dior Frères. In 1911, when he reached the age of 6 his family moved to Paris, however, on summer vacations they returned to Normandy. In the book Christian Dior: The Man who Made the World Look New the author, explains the close relationship Dior had with his mother, he was the only child of the five to acquire his mother’s gardening skill. This caused his siblings to call him mother’s pet and to recall that their mom was more authoritarian on the girls than on the boys. Dior expressed his passion for art and interest in becoming an architect, moreover, his father disagreed with this idea and placed pressure on him into enrolling at the École des Sciences Politiques. In 1925 he began his career in Political Science and graduated in 1928. Upon graduation he planned to open a small art gallery and it was possible with the financial help of his father, provided to him under the condition that the family name would not appear anywhere above the gallery door. Few years later, this gallery opened, he carried works from famous artist such as: Georges Braque, Pablo Picasso, Jean Cocteau and Max Jacob. Hubert de Givenchy was born on February 20, 1927 in Beauvais, France. When he was young his father died, leaving him to be raised by his mother and grandfather. His wealthy family never approved of Givenchy’s love for fashion and instead wanted him to attend college and pursue a career in law. Eventually he attended college achieving his career in law but realized his love for fabrics and fashion was stronger (In influential fashion, 2002).
Today, when you walk down just about any populated street, any busy hallway, or take a seat on any public bus, there’s a good chance what someone’s wearing might catch your eye for a number of reasons, maybe a strong message or a beautiful design. The strengths of the book come from its’ accessibility. The book is easy to follow and provides readers with a great deal of information about the production of mass-manufactured clothing. As well as brings awareness to its’ many issues which we inadvertently take part in when we purchase such products. The book is well written and thoroughly researched but does have its’ share of weaknesses.

In conclusion both the 1920’s and current fashion trends of embellishment and fabric manipulation saw unique creativeness and style. The 20’s Flapper movement which consisted of fringes, beading , sequins, gather and pleating resemblance of the Art Deco movement adding texture to the garment, while today’s current fashion technology known as Fabrican has revolutionized fashion making it time efficient and speeding up garment construction process. But most importantly it was both the 1920’s and current fashion that has worked successfully in the fashion industry and used to this day.
Fashion has changed a great deal over the past three centuries. As history changes it seems that fashion in some aspect changes with it to adapt to the era. Even today fashion continues to change as the years go on. Looking at fashion even 20 years ago we can see a difference from what we see in our everyday lives. For the purpose of this essay Fashion will be divided into three centuries, since not every era of clothing can be touched upon.
