The first article I shall be examining is an article from The Daily Telegraph titled 'Including children with Down 's syndrome in mainstream schools benefits everyone ' and is authored by Katherine Horrocks, the mother of two boys, one of whom has Down syndrome. This article gives Katherine’s view of parenting her son Alexander with Down syndrome and her advocacy of inclusion. The article focuses heavily on the problems that Katherine faces having a disabled child and how inclusion teaches tolerance. It adopts such assumption that inclusion is fairly successful for the majority of children with Down syndrome. (Horrocks. K, 2012)
The discourse present within in the article that portrays Alexander is present within the tragedy/charity model, highlighting the difference in power between groups of people (E214 Unit 2, P52) In this example, it highlights the differences between mothers of disabled children and that of mothers with non disabled children. The focus throughout the article is on Alexander’s condition, how he needs almost constant supervision leaving Katherine in need of respite and Katherine’s fears of what Alexander has done at school. In conclusion, consequent to scrutinising both articles I chose, it is clear that they are both tendentious and the discourse and models present within the articles are emotive and are relevant to time and context, Katherine’s views differ greatly from those of Sarah however, each woman is not in the same environment, each woman has a different role in life and no doubt different life experiences and with different expectations.
